Interesting that you registered just to post this. Are you fiveasone?
I found multiple instances of frankensteined/edited commercial assets in their work, not just the one posted. This is another one I made a gif of:
You can't take other people's work like this and claim it as your own. You especially can't claim explicit legal ownership of it and guarantee to the users of this site that they can legally use these assets in their games when they can, in fact, not.
I have a decent familiarity with megaman x and final fantasy enemies because of my background, but none of us can spot every asset like this from every possible source. In spite of our best efforts this site has to operate to some extent on trust, and we can't trust an artist who will use commercial assets like this.
Thanks. It's a shame when something like this happens--I just worry how many others there are that didn't happen to use assets that someone who saw them happened to be familiar with. I'm kind of surprised I could still spot megaman x assets since it's been years since I used to do that kind of stuff. Just gotta muddle through I guess.
The first one is definitely an edit, a lot of clusters are identical and he didn't even fully recolor it.
The second one is more a demonstration that his actual skill level is a lot lower than his copied/edited works would suggest.
Here's another random example. I can't track them all down but he's actually being pretty blatant about it.
Even a single instance of this type of theft in someone's portfolio taints the rest of their work. It's only reasonable to ban someone for this. Any dev who used one of these sprites would be at risk, legally speaking, and if someone actually got in trouble for something they got from OGA (even if it weren't a full CnD, being publicly called out for using megaman or final fantasy edits would be enough) it would be absolutely awful for the site (and by extension for people's faith in using FOSS assets at all).
The more I look, the more I think this is him intentionally stealing and covering it up. This type of frankensteining used to be a common thing in the 'ol megaman sprite comic pixel scene, and for making sprite comics nobody cares (and since everyone was awful at pixel art it was the most anyone could do). But on a site that requires you to explicitly say you are the sole owner of the work, it is hard to justify.
When I say I don't have explicit proof, I just meant I didn't take the time to carefully document it. This is definitely not just one mistake, it's a pattern of plagiarism.
You can also see that pieces that are more original (ie, things where he's just copying someone else's design) show a much lower level of skill, blobby outlines and pillow shading.
Whether out of malice or ignorance I certainly can't say. Either way I think he should be banned because I don't think he can be trusted as a reliable source of properly licensed assets. Even if no more plagiarism is immediately detected in new upoloads, there are so many sources he could pull from, and not all of them are as iconic (or rather, as widely edited/frankensteined) as MMX and FF6 that could be a lot harder to spot.
The left asset is from Megaman X. Note that the feet are identical, and he didn't even fully recolor them to match the rest of the sprite. He's done some amount of original work, but he's definitely plagiarizing in the process.
No clue at all. Just figured I should point it out as it'd been pointed out to me. I sent Bart a message on google talk as well but I don't know that he'll ever see it.
It would pretty much have to be done manually, since just resizing them will produce some nasty artifacts. That said it shouldn't be too difficult for someone to do. I unfortunately don't have time for it but it wouldn't be very difficult for someone with basic pixel art skills.
Hello. Each of the licenses is standalone, so you can pick whichever one you like. Meaning you don't need to use the sharealike license, as you can just use either CC-By or OGA-By, which are each more permissive.
The only reason -SA is listed as an option is because that was the original license and I think it's a good idea to not just remove reference to it.
By the way, are you on discord? It might be easier to do direct contact that way, since I think I'm missing OGA notifications sometimes.
My ID is Scarodactyl#5801 if so.
I responded to their sockpuppet in the forum thread. Might as well keep it out in the open.
Their response definitely makes me think they knew what they were doing. Hope they don't try to cause trouble.
