Weird Al gave thanks both to T-Pain and Nickelback on his album Straight Outta Lynwood even though he didn't end up making the parodies they authorized.  So I'd say that it's not unprecedented--and no doubt it will not go unappreciated.

Indeed, what Surt said.  It is just a very basic floor and wall set which would fulfill some basic prototyping, placeholder or small projecty needs.  The added ceiling tiles are appreciated, though :)

It's really neat to see the base in use like this, even if it wasn't exactly the usage I'd imagined.  Thanks for sharing your work!  I'll have to take a look at the game when I get a chance.

Gaurav did make the tool to put the sprites together, but he did not make the sprites.  They represent the work of a number of different artists.  I suspect that the required credits are gathered somewhere in the Git, though.

Of course, if you go with the JRPG style, there is a rather large set available under CC-By: http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/rpg-enemy-project

O.o This is some very impressive work!  I can't wait to dig into the files, but the previews alone are rather stunning.  Thank you very much for your willingness to share these pieces!

For the record, I think it would be awesome to see a sprite comic using the LPC assets.  I got into pixel art thanks to sprite comics back in their hayday.

Yup.  I was going to put a lot of stuff up from his forum thread but didnt end up having time, so i cut the collection rather than leave it up with one entry.  The thread has everything anyway.

I have exactly the thing for you.

He's not up in the gallery yet because I still haven't finished and polished him yet, but he's fully functional for basic platformer stuff (see http://static.opengameart.org/jsplatformer/game.html)

(Not to say that Master's wouldn't be a good option as well--I suggest Xeon in particular because that sprite is modelled somewhat after Megaman X1-3's aesthetics).
