Attribution/credit for art not used
Hi,
Getting ready to publish a game.
I used a lot of stuff from Open Game Art during the development of the game, both as prototype art when building out the game, and/or as reference when creating my own art for the game.
I would like to give some acknowledgement to these artists, currently I have the following text in the credits scroll:
Art from the following artists was used during the development of this game.
Although their works do not appear in the final game, wtl studios wishes to acknowledge the contribution made by these artists.
Thought I'd ask if anyone else has ever done a similar attribution and if their was a alternate, preferred or more standard wording for it.
PS
plan to submit my art for the game as PD once it's done, which I figure is the best way to say thanks, but thought a kind word in the credits couldn't hurt.
Weird Al gave thanks both to T-Pain and Nickelback on his album Straight Outta Lynwood even though he didn't end up making the parodies they authorized. So I'd say that it's not unprecedented--and no doubt it will not go unappreciated.
I don't think you need to use any kind of standard wording for this. If you aren't using someone's art in your final game, you have no contractual obligation to include them in the credits, so I don't see why there would be any particular way that you "should" do it. The fact that you're doing it is awesome, and, as Redshrike said, I think people will appreciate it. :)
Since there were working builds of the game that used the art, it feels right to give some sort of credit, or to put it conversly, it would feel wrong not to give any mention. I basically got the whole game running using Russpuppy's RPG Tileset, then 'auditioned' many other tile/sprite sets before rolling my own. It was very useful as it allowed me to get the game up and going quickly and try out many different visual styles for it.
Anyway, glad to hear you two are appreciative and approve of my wording as you're both on the acknowledgement list! ;)

Yeah, I think its a nice and great thing to do. I'll probably use a lot of filler assets, and by my second-to-third game I'd like to use fully originally assets. For my first one (which will basically just be a prototype) I'll probably use entirely assets from OGA, primarily sticking with CC0 and LPC.
Regardless of what's used in the final or not, I still would like to give credit to anyone's assets I've used, even in the case of CC0 which doesn't require attribution at all.
For music I'm probably going to try and stick to using Matthew Pablo's music as much as I can (I already asked him permission months ago) and a few CC0 music as well.
