To whoever marked “potential licensing issues”: as a long-time fan of NettySvit, I can vouch NettySvit knows very well about how copyright works. Also, as someone who owns RPG Makers from 2000 till MZ (...I regret that, don't buy it, don't support the business practices of Kadokawa...), I can vouch that these are not based on RTP.
When NettySvit bases something on RTP, she warns specifically about this (example). This is not the case with the work here. This is an original work.
If anyone needs CC0 UI for RPG Maker VX (Ace), I'm attaching my wooden UI. Note that it was created for RPG Maker VX (not Ace) so it is not guaranteed to play well with VX Ace's recolouring feature. It's also CC0, I've made it myself. The tree texture of the background was based on a CC0 photo.
(I feel it's too small to warrant a separate submission, but if someone ever makes a submission with CC0 RM graphics, feel free to include mine.)
I especially like the fact that hair is in the upper 8px, and clothes are in the lower 8px. This allows to swap the palette mid-sprite, one colours for the upper 8px and another for the lower 8px, like Final Fantasy does.
(N. B. I assume that's what FF is doing by looking at the sprites: [FF1], [FF2], [FF3a], [FF3b], [FF3c], [FF3d], [FF3e]. I don't know what are the techinal implications of doing this on a real NES.)
Yes, it's Nestopia. I've added this to the description.
i would love to see Nestor become a thing that goes beyond this one cool tileset. not saying you have to do all the work, but alot of us could collab and use your tileset as the kind of base style guide for new tilesets. and cc0 is generous and most useful license imo. you think this would be something you could get behind? like, a cc0 nes-themed lpc? it would be so cool to see my little spur of the moment art challenge evolve to something like that.
I would absolutely love it! Thank you. If you create some characters, I'll try to add some in your style
There are things that can be improved, and maybe I'll improve them in the future. But I'm more-or-less glad with how it turned out.
I've really enjoyed this art challenge. The 'no voting, no time frame' idea really makes it less stressful than some other events. And the NES limitations make it simpler to actually finish something. Thanks, Ragnar Random, for the event!
But I'm afraid this is not something you can post on OpenGameArt, because your added copyright clause makes it non-open:
"These asset packs cant be used in any commercial project, resold/redistributed, even if modified"
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_license for a more thorough description of what is an open license, but basically all the art on OpenGameArt allow commercial use. Adding this clause to CC-BY turns it into a license similar to CC-BY-NC (which is not supported on OpenGameArt).
This clause is basically incompatible with the idea of the website. The idea that the art can be used in any open-source game, but open-source does not mean free. For example, Battle for Wesnoth is open-source, but they sell their iOS version. Open-source licenses do allow commercial use, and a non-commercial license is not compatible with most definitions of open-source.
You can still advertise your paid tileset on OGA's submissions, but you can't put it as a resource. You either need to put this link in the Slates submission, or re-license a small part of the new graphics as a 'sample' under a free license, submit that sample and add a link like 'you can find more like this for a price here'.

It would be very lovely!
Thanks everyone for your kind words and suggestions about compatible graphics
Thank you for your kind words!
I've published the more-or-less finished tileset: https://opengameart.org/content/nestor-tileset

I'm still working on my submission, here's what I have now. I will try to post my tiles during the weekend or on Monday.
Thanks for the event!
I'll try to make something
Thank you for all your wonderful art!
