Nestor is a NES-like tileset created for the NESfeel art challenge. It aims to imitate NES limitations (uses 3 palettes of 4 colours; the assumption is that 4th palette is used for GUI). The palette used is Nestopia palette.

The tileset is formatted for use in RPG Maker 2000, 2003 and their free alternatives: EasyRPG Player and R48 editor. Of course, you can use it in any other program, too (although you might need to use 8*8 grid or reformat the autotiles if you use a different format).

The tileset is named after Nestor the Chronicler who wrote the Tale of Bygone Years. NES is a historical console from bygone years, so I think it's a fitting name.

I might eventually expand this to add more tiles in the similar style, so if you have suggestions about tiles you'd like to be added, feel free to comment.

P.S. I would be glad if you could check out the projects I'm involved in:

  • in Ukrainian: RPG.ukr, the Ukrainian website about RPG Maker and similar editors,
  • in Russian: the VK Group of the Garbata team.

That's pretty cool for such a tight restriction.

Folks who like this should also be sure to check out the Zoria tileset! (Also available on this site)

this is a lovely tileset. it's not just ot just Zoria though, alot of artwork on here can be mixed if you swap all to unified palette and do some editing. Alot of surt's stuff is like that, very adaptable.

it makes me want to have a crack at trying to come up with a "Nestor chara set" to go with it.

palette is nestopia, right?

i would love to see Nestor become a thing that goes beyond this one cool tileset. not saying you have to do all the work, but alot of us could collab and use your tileset as the kind of base style guide for new tilesets. and cc0 is generous and most useful license imo. you think this would be something you could get behind? like, a cc0 nes-themed lpc? it would be so cool to see my little spur of the moment art challenge evolve to something like that.

i love oga.

Yes, it's Nestopia. I've added this to the description.

I would absolutely love it! Thank you. If you create some characters, I'll try to add some in your style

he looks more like pokemon that final fantasy. i am not used to keeping myself in 16x16, i usually just size stuff however i fancy. i gotta do some improvements, smaller head would be less pokemon-ish i think.

Looks great!!

I especially like the fact that hair is in the upper 8px, and clothes are in the lower 8px. This allows to swap the palette mid-sprite, one colours for the upper 8px and another for the lower 8px, like Final Fantasy does.

(N. B. I assume that's what FF is doing by looking at the sprites: [FF1], [FF2], [FF3a], [FF3b], [FF3c], [FF3d], [FF3e]. I don't know what are the techinal implications of doing this on a real NES.)
