@MvdM: that is great to hear.
Tuesday, March 31, 2020 - 10:59

@MvdM: that is great to hear. Are there any links or documents you could provide that offer some official usage guidance? As we both mentioned, it is obvious game devs must be allowed to use such icons in their games, but there are often still stipulations from the trademark holder.

If Sony says 'these are ok to use, but only in playstation games', then there is still an issue. These assets are licensed CC0 meaning developers can use them in any way, including sony-competing platforms.

I'm hoping with your experience developing console games you may have access to official guidelines about this. If not, well... the trademarked parts constitute a very small portion of this fantastic set of assets, so removing just those parts is not as terrible a loss. :)

@xelu: these are such great

@docfo4r: hmm... that is a registered trademark of Sony. I was not aware of that. I haven't been able to find usage guidelines for them either.

3rd party developers have always used exactly this kind of asset in their PS games, but that may have always been "fair use" or something similar. If anyone knows more about Sony's usage guidelines for trademarked button icons, please share. Until we know more, I have to mark this as having a licensing issue.

@xelu: these are such great assets it would be a shame to lose access to the whole set. Would you be willing to omit the "triangle", "circle", "cross", and "square" icons? That would leave the rest usable and give the developer the opportunity to fill in the blanks with their own "fair use" versions if they found that to be acceptable

I added a .zip file of png's.

I added a .zip file of png's. Each layer group is a folder, each layer is a separate png. :)

@danitorres567: I don't want to step on your toes here. This is your submission, so if you would rather not have this addition, let me know.

I bet there's loot inside.

GIMP converts psd's, but yes

GIMP converts psd's, but yes a set of png's are nice as well. Either way, these are great! Thanks for sharing.

Yay! Recongratulations!

^Varkalandar is correct: All
Friday, March 27, 2020 - 18:12

^Varkalandar is correct: All 3 allow commercial use. Just be sure to give credit and share any changes you make to the art under the same license. See the FAQ for details.

As for why any art would be GPL, I agree GPL makes a poor art license, but some art was licensed GPL in the absence of better art licenses (people wanted to share game art, but Creative Commons didn't exist yet). Also, some projects prefer to license the entire project (code, art, music, story) under a single license. If the license is GPL before the art gets involved, it tends to stick to the art as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cool. Hope you find a good

Cool. Hope you find a good artist. FYI, that is not isometric, it is othogonal oblique. See some examples here: https://opengameart.org/content/oblique-projection-all-assets
