I am pretty sure they're Sharm, because she re-released them in this pack; she makes reference to fixes to a " few perspective errors I'd made when I first drew the tiles," attributes only herself and William Thompson (who commissioned a couple of other packs).

Good point MedicineStorm, I misspoke. There have been a few other items that bart had to edit out of this set earlier after directly comparing with the RTP (he mentions the clock face and the tents, which you can still see in the preview). I hope that you would be comfortable just doing the same with the lanterns, since this is a great set and I think we all want it to remain available to the community.

On the other hand, mold raises a good point that there might be other "problem" items hidden within the submission... Should someone look through this and the RTP side-to-side again to be sure, or are we pretty confident that bart did a good job and just missed this one?

Hate to be acting like the licensing police again, but...

The discussion of another recent submission included some comparisons with the RTP from RPGMaker... I was surprised to notice that the street lights attributed to RPGMaker in that comparison looked very similar to the tree lanterns from this submission... since this set apparently began as an RPGMaker edit, it seems likely the lights here were lifted from the RTP.

I can't seem to extract the RPGMaker RTP to check for myself---can someone confirm?

If so, this would be too bad, because a number of other submissions have been created based on those lanterns :(

I appreciate the work you put in to collecting all this art together. It must have been quite a puzzle to get everything to fit so neatly! However, the attributions really need to be fixed.

- A number of the original submissions request a link back to the original entry on OpenGameArt, which you have not done

- There is so much duplication that it's hard to find information about where things are from

- Some contributions are not attributed at all, for instance https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-misc-tile-atlas-interior-exterior-tr... and I suspect others

- All of this makes me suspicious that all of the pieces included can be licensed CC-BY; for instance, the one I linked above is CC-BY-SA, meaning that your entire submission needs to be CC-BY-SA.

I know it can seem like a hassle to get the attributions right, but it's really disrespectful to the authors of the original work if you don't go to the trouble of making sure they get proper credit (not to mention the fact that failing to credit someone as required by their license or sublicensing incorrectly is technically in breach of the license). That means not only being thorough, but being neat enough that someone could reasonably be expected to look at your attributions/credits file and figure out what came from where. For instance, as a practical example, AntumDeluge has had a hard time attributing his derivative because it's impossible to tell where some of the parts of your submission came from.

Looks like at least the bottom shelf book is from https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-house-interior-and-decorations by Reemax. Idk about the one on the middle shelf---I spent a while looking for it, but it only seems to appear in that giant merged submission; just goes to show the problem with using art of unclear provenance...

The bottles are from Mage City Arcanos by Hyptosis (CC0) https://opengameart.org/content/mage-city-arcanos and LPC House Interior and Decorations by Reemax (multiple licenses) https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-house-interior-and-decorations

The flowers are from RPG Item Set by Jetrel (CC0) https://opengameart.org/content/rpg-item-set

Looks like only Reemax's submission is not CC0, but I think it's still polite to credit the others. I also think you need to link back to daneeklu's submission in the attribution instructions, as that's what he requests on his submission page: https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-farming-tilesets-magic-animations-an...

I think those are great
Tuesday, February 20, 2018 - 19:06

I think those are great points, MedicineStorm. We should definitely work on fixing the attribution problem(s) in submissions. Maybe we could make a separate topic for that---there are a few that definitely need fixing, and a few (including my own) which probably deserve a look by someone else to make sure the attributions are correct.

I also didn't realize that multiple people could collaborate on collection(s). I agree that elmerenges collection looks pretty comprehensive, maybe someone could reach out to them and ask to add some collaborators. The main issue seems to be ensuring the collection is kept up to date, even if the original collector becomes inactive (for instance, Pennomi had a collection of all the LPC assets, but they don't seem to be active anymore).

I think a repository could still be valuable for two reasons:

1) the attribution information could be standardized (e.g. in a table or standard text format, like many open source games do); this would allow the attributions to be dropped in to a project rather than being manually curated each time from the credits.txt file. It would also allow us to fix attribution information on submissions where the original author is not cooperating. I admit this is only a marginal benefit over just collecting art on OGA.

2) It could allow an additional level of curation; for instance, there are some submissions of quite different style, still tagged as "LPC;" for instance, compare this livestock submission to this one. Both fine pieces of art, but probably not belonging in the same game. Then there are some submissions which attempt to collect lots of similar/related pieces together and coerce them into a compatible style, like some of mine. Then there are those that lump a whole ton of assets together into one or a few spritesheets (in my personal opinion, these aren't terribly useful, as different games will have different requirements, and they seem to be causing some attribution problems). However, I'm not sure this type of curation is something that should happen in an "official" "OpenGameArt" repository, because there will almost certainly be differences of opinion, and it's unclear to me who would resolve them.

Perhaps, somewhat like makrohn and jrconway3's repositories for character sprites, we could standardize some system of organizing assets, but again this is an opinionated process. There could also be varying degrees of "QA" like what Eliza's been doing with the bodies. Certainly could be fun and potentially useful, but I think it will definitely be opinionated, and I'm not sure it belongs in an official-sounding location like github.com/opengameart/liberatedpixelcup .

The ones you've marked as "Unknown" are from https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-a-shootem-up-complete-graphic-kit

I really appreciate what you're doing, and I'm glad so much art is being collected and used for Stendhal. However I would suggest not posting art if you're unsure of the source; it's unfair to the original artist. Also when you post something, you assume the responsibility of ensuring it's properly licensed--how can you know that if you're not sure where it came from?

As a side note, I realize this probably happened because you were working from that repack https://opengameart.org/node/79256 which has really messy attribution (and I would not be surprised if the attribution there is incomplete)... this is one reason why I don't think those giant indiscriminate repacks are very useful, unless they're purpose-made for a specific game. It makes the attribution too hard. Maybe those of us who are doing lots of LPC stuff should get together and keep a complete collection somewhere, either here or on GitHub as ElizaWy suggested---that way we could have the individual pieces/submissions broken out so the attribution isn't so touch, but we wouldn't have to rely on those repacks to find stuff.

Very nice edit!

Very nice edit!

However, the original was not licensed CC0, so you'll need to chose one or more of those licenses. You also need to follow the attribution instructions and link back to the original submission: http://opengameart.org/content/lpc-horses
