There is also a bit of a hacky but somewhat functional trick to geneate forward-left/right and backward-left/right from forward and backwards sprites.
"A turn around sheet should show a character from a variety of different angles. The most basic are forward, backward, left and right, with the 3/4s angles forward-left, forward-right, backward-left and backward-right creating a more complete set. Left and right can be flipped versions of each other unless a character is asymmetrical (for example, wearing an eye-patch or having a facial scar). Backwards can usually be made by editing the forward facing sprite by covering the face with hair (or bald head) and reversing the hands and feet. Finally, the 3/4s angles can be made from the forward or backward image by using the 3D translation option in GIMP, rotating it by 45 degrees on the Y axis. This produces a reasonable albeit flat looking facsimile, although it is often best to then stretch the height back down by a bit. A degree of depth may then be restored by layering the image over itself offset by one or two pixels a few times. The 3/4s left and right can again be flipped provided the character is symmetrical."
This allows you to only produce five or even three frames for each direction. It might not be the best to use for the base, but might work for some of the overlays?

Weapons

Leave as is or add in a dagger or knuckleduster. Maybe Wolverine style claws?
The punch in this first verison might be worth looking into:

Edit it to fire blue electrical arrows and the poision darts.
Animate this and submit it to Blasphemer to free the old crossbow up:

Edit the cocking to work as the at rest sprite.

The one from this version might be better, but it is not in the attic for some reason:
https://github.com/freedoom/historic/tree/trunk/0.3
And a possible pickup sprite:

Will need to be edited around for the four stages. The bulbs on the side and the barrel would work.
Probally a good idea to give back to Zauberer if this got used.
Or maybe...

There is also a rather interesting BFG sprite in this pre-alpha version of Freedoom.

Beings
3D models are to be rigged, posed, captured and touched up into sprites.
Static sprites are to be edited or redrawn into five/eight directions. Some possible shortcuts are outlined here:

The original Doomworld thread had proposed a steampunk look with clockwork automata, which would not be a bad idea to aspire to.

Would be kinda neat for a WW1 Wolf3D mod.
Any chance you would consider making a male and female base in the style of this?
Reminds me of D'Sparil's mount from Heretic.
Technically I didn't even rework it, just dug it out of the Wayback Machine.
The original was made by Radomir Dopieralski. I merely shared it here.
Nice work though.
This sprite is included in Zauberer.
