This did not go as well as I had hoped. I notice you guys use a lot of .blend files here, and our support for them seems much worse than I was expecting.
This raises another workflow issue, which is: if it's not going to convert, then nobody wants to bother uploading it, but you're prompted to waste time on the metadata form. I'll have to find some GUI solution.
This one model does work pretty well though - It's nice to see our runtime delivery play the rigged animation.
Thanks for the info. No worries - I'm not worried about preventing people from copying and moving content from my site so much as I'm worried that I might be violating someone else's TOS by copying and hosting stuff myself.
Eventually, I'd love to have a repo of cool art that users could drag and drop, so they have something to play with. I plan to eventually commission someone to build some showcase content that I can feature.
One big problem I've had in the past is getting good inputs to the various engines I've worked on. Some previous employers have been SUPER strict about using anything found online, and so often all my engine demos are "Pretend this sphere is an awesome tank....."
Since this is a personal project, I'm hoping to leverage a lot more open content.
Right, good call. Let me add a few additional metadata fields to the records and the GUI. If you guys don't mind then, I'm going to pick a few good models and post them. They'll be availabe when the users search the repo from withing the editor, and on the main repo page.
I don't know... is scraping stuff then hosting it elsewhere rude? I know if I found a model I had made and uploaded to OGA listed on TurboSquid or TF3DM, I'd be sort of annoyed.... I guess one issue is that the DB does not have a good place for attribution other than the "uploaded by". Maybe I should add that.
There is an additional DCMA issue - as the host of the web site, I think that if I do it myself, and I don't know for certain that it's properly licenced, that can be a problem. I see a lot of stuff on TF3DM that really must be violating somebodies IP, even though the user claims it's CC-By or whatever.
Here's a link to one of the more successful uploads:
