Hey all,

This is my entry to the "Eternal Ice" challenge.  I had more ambitious plans for a fuller set of ice enemies, but...first week of school, etc etc et al. misc bbq.

I may come back at some point and add more variations: various gem recolors/reworks, stone, etc.  Or maybe someone else will?  Who knows.

This is great, but it reads more as metal than as ice to me, due to the high contrast. If you decreased the contrast and added a bit of green to the palette I think it'd look more like ice and not quite as metallic. :)  Perhaps making some of the shapes that make up his form a bit more organic might help too, but I dunno...

Add green?  No way, if anything it needs to be more towards purple.  I think it's the dark outlines that's making it look like metal though, it reads as something very opaque.  Up the brightness and saturation, lower the contrast and it looks a lot more like ice.

Ice Golem edit

Don't you think?

Hey guys!  I appreciate the comments and suggestions.  Ice comes in a variety of textures and colorations, of course; I was imagining the original as somewhere between translucent blue glacial ice and more familiar colorless, clear ice as in an icicle, in either case with some smooth and some flat-polished surfaces. But I just made the palette up as I went along and didn't do much polishing because I was posting it just after midnight on the due date and just wanted to get something in.  I might go back and make a few more versions incorporating your suggestions--depending, alas, on my increasingly busy school schedule.  Or, of course, I welcome your modifications as well, and if you'd like I can add them to the post.
@Mumu: xD, those look hiliariawesome.

Yup, believe it or not, green. :)  Not pure green (as in RGB #00ff00), but green tones within the colors used. I'm not going to go into a whole essay on color theory here, I'll let this edit speak for itself:

I did make a conscious effort to keep the dark outlines. I think they're a stylistic requirement for this sprite, and I work with dark outlines all the time, so I feel comfortable keeping 'em. :)

I'd like to point out that increasing brightness and contrast using automated tools (filters or whatever) isn't the preferable way to go; if you need to adjust the palette it's best to adjust the brightness/colors of the individual colors in the palette, that way you have more control over the end result and it doesn't become washed-out looking.

Well, I don't agree that the green specifically makes it look more like ice, but the edit does fix some of the contrast issues of the sprite and adding some hue shift towards any color is good.  As for adjusting things with processing, it was because this isn't my sprite.  I just wanted to get the idea across quickly, not fix it myself.  Either way, I need to not treat this forum like Pixelation, sorry Redshrike.  It's obviously an interesting sprite or else we wouldn't be talking about it this much.  ^_^

OK, way after the fact I've made some small updates to this guy.  I don't know if I've really addressed the issues raised here, but I'm probably going to be making some semi-redundant pieces later anyway, so no need to spend too much more time on it.

That said, I really do enjoy getting feedback and critiques in the comments here.  It's helpful and good.

Hi Redshrike,

I really like this submission and thought I should give you my input.  I agree with what artisticdude said about the original being metal-ish looking but I also agree with you on ice being a variety of colorations.

I'm hoping Dusk get's revived/modernized by Lou as it seems like he is still interested in this game.  When or if that happens, I'm positive we will use all of these Golem recolorations.  I've taken a close look at each sprite and thought about names to call them in Dusk.  Your first version I would call a Metal Golem (sharp pointy head), second version a Rock Golem (more grey, rounder head), artisticdude's Ice Golem (the bright blue and green tones remind me of ocean water), and Mumu's Fire and Dark Golem's.  Already thought of possible quest items to go with each one ;)

Seeing such nice pixel art makes me want to make a game to use it.  I'll give it a shot at learning Java programming to try and help revive Dusk.  Good work everybody on the variations :D

Very nice variations!

I think you should make them animated and give them some basic movement frames.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Some people have asked for animations on a few of these rpg enemies, but that would kind of defeat the purpose.  These are intended to be static, and as such I can use a higher color count, more detailed shading/texture and other techniques which would make animation take inordinate amounts of time.  I would never be able to make enough for a full game if I took the time to do that, which is my goal for this set.

Of the creatures I've found on this site, this is my favorite so far. I'm using it as the ice boss on the first level of my game 42's Orb of Valhalla.

This drawing looks amazing, but I'm kinda against it being featured for so many years in a row....
