In addition to the 3000+ original tiles, here are 3000+ MORE tiles used in the game Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/

The great artists of the Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup team have recently enhanced and added to the already-amazing set with this supplemental collection of tiles: even more spells, effects, monsters, items, GUI elements, player avatars, terrain, and dungeon features.

All images are 2D 32x32 pixel tiles in orthogonal (overhead) three-quarters  perspective.

  • Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Supplemental.zip file contains the latest addition of 3000+ tiles. The tiles are individual 32x32 sprite .png files organized into folder categories. See https://opengameart.org/content/dungeon-crawl-32x32-tiles for the original set of tiles these are meant to supplement.
  • Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Full.zip file contains both the first set plus this newer addition for a total of over 6000 tiles! The tiles are individual 32x32 sprite .png files organized into folder categories.
  • ProjectUtumno_supplemental.png file is the same 3000+ found in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Supplemental.zip, but arranged in a nice (huge) tileset.
  • ProjectUtumno_full.png file is the same 6000+ found in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Full.zip, but arranged in a nice (huger) tileset.

Have you ever played Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup? You should. Seriously, it's a great game. These tiles are a collaborative effort of many artists. See README.TXT included in the .zip files for a full list of the contributors.

Just to clarify - the "supplemental" files are the update? ProjectUtumno_full.png and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Full.zip appear to be from the previous submission.

Correct, though the "full" files are not just the previous submission; they are the previous submission combined with the new supplemental. :) Just for the convenience of everyone who didn't already have the first set.

Hey,

first of all: great work, I really like it.

As copyright says they are free to use I would like to use the tiles and sprites for my own RPG. The point is that RPG maker MV needs 48*48 tiles.

Here as a completely noob I got stuck: How to convert a whole tileset of 32*32 like ProjectUtumno_supplemental.png into a set of 48*48?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Open the image in GIMP
  2. Image menu > Scale Image
  3. Next to "image size", change the dropdown from pixels ("px") to percent ("%").
  4. Enter 150.00% for Width and 150.00% for Height.
  5. If you want a somewhat more pixel-art look, set Interpolation to "None", or for an anti-aliased look, leave it on "Cubic". Experiment. Try several interpolations and see what you like best.
  6.  Click the "Scale" button.
  7. File menu > Export As..., then give it a new name ending in .png and save.

Unfortunately, losing some image quality is unavoidable because you're taking a smaller image and making it larger. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for that, it helped.

I imported the resized tileset and it worked. But only a quarter of the whole set. It was cut in row 16 after the pink flashes. Is it because the other sprites are not tagged as "tiles" but "items" or "enemies"?

Concerning the enemy-sprites: Do they contain some kind of animation I could use in RPG-Maker?

Clipping after row 16 would be a limitation of RPG Maker, not the image itself. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with RPG Maker so I couldn't confirm or advise on how to remedy that.

There is no metadata in this image. sprites aren't tagged anything unless you tag them in RPG Maker. It's just an image. If you don't see multiple frames of animation on the spritesheet, there's no hidden frames to animate. Sorry.

hello,

i am also doing a game using those wonderful assets but am not using any packages like RPG Maker or Unity or anything else, just plain OpenGL and my own 3D engine so i have a better grasp of limitations.

I don't know what is that 16th row you're referring to but if you're trying to load the entire atlas (provided above) as a single texture, you will have great problems of compatibility in the future.

The image itself it's 2048x3040, which is pretty huge and while desktop OpenGL/DirectX versions might be able to load it, if you're targetting embedded OpenGL (i.e. android and iOS) you'll find yourself in a world of hurt. Many mobile phones does not supported bigger resolutions than 2048x2048.

Provided you're already resized the texture to 150% of its size, you get a texture that will have even bigger problems in the future.

It's also non powered-by-2 image, some drivers still doesn't even support it and you may have performance hits where it works. Embedded devices are harder to forgive in that part.

Besides all that, you might crashed into a hardware limit set by RPG Maker itself which i don't know about. Still, the problem starts with the huge images. Increasing an image of 2048x1536 to something like 3072x2304 (150%) is not something a GPU processor would ever like or RPG maker for that part.

What you can do instead (and i'm doing in my game) is selecting only the tiles you really want for your game, placed into carefully crafted images of an at most 2048x2048 sized texture to achieve maximum compatibility. For example, i made an items.png, placing all my items there; around 512x512 which is guaranteed to work anywhere. Point is, creating your own atlas images of powered-by-2 images, placing only what you really need from this huge set of assets.

vlzvl is right; crafting the spritsheet to only contain the specific sprites you need is a good idea. On the other hand, my game loads the entire 2048x3040 ProjectUtumno_Full.png with no issues. Using OpenGL on an older GPU even. The specific software framework (read: RPG Maker) is more likely the limiting factor than the hardware in my opinion. Mobile and desktop browsers also seem to display it just fine from this page, so I am dubious the underlying hardware could be the boundry.

Look at the dimensions of the default tilesets that came with RPG Maker. You might have to divide it up into several tilesets each using those same dimensions.

i did a very quick search on RPG Maker texture limitations and i found that:

https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/tileset-dimensions.47064/

I am not fond of different RPG Maker versions like MV, XP or Ace etc. but it says the maximum tileset dimensions are 768x768 i.e. 16x16 of 48x48 tiles and obviously that's pretty limited. Regardless, you have to pick the desired tiles and make images of that size since you're using RPG Maker. The post itself is about 2 years old so i don't either if newer versions got out fixing this limit.

PS. i hope i didn't broke any TOS by posting the link

Thanks for your quick replys.

The problem, as you pointed, is indeed the limited tileset diminsions of RPG Maker. So I have to cut it in pieces of 768*768 and import each of them seperately.

I have been looking for some good 32x32 tiles for a Maze Generator/Solver program I am creating and these look great for my use.

My main use for these are tiles that represents floors, walls, stairs up/down, and a key which is needed to exit the maze.

Thank you for sharing these and I will be adding credits in my program.

Epic.

I am currently trying to upscale some of these sprites. I start with scaling it with pixelart specialized algorithms, such as XBR or HQ2X, and then manually polish them. Looks good so far. I'll share the results back under CC0 as soon as I'm finished :)

Hey, This is soo cool! Im a total noob at game development, but I'm trying to learn. Are there tiles in your pack for animating the characters or is that something we have to do ourselves? Thanks!

Edit: How would I go about putting armour or clothes on too?

Thanks!

There's even more sprites and improvements in the newer DCSS game builds!

Are they also public domain like this set is?

Thank you!

@maleGuest: no, not all of the art included in the DCSS builds is public domain. The above package is currently the latest release of the CC0 parts. It specifically excludes the closed components you may encounter in the graphical DCSS package.

@medicineStorm if you play the latest DCSS tiles, you can compare Sastreii's new graphics to these ones and notice the difference. They've improved so many tiles now!

Here are few examples, if you scroll down to the file history, you can see the changes:

Sorry, I mean can you link to where these are associated with Sastreii? They were added to the GitHub by pleasingfungus, but we need to have information from the author in order to determine if they are released cc0. In all likelihood, we will need to wait for the next official cc0 release to see what authors granted the new additions for free use.
