An open letter to McAfee

By bart on 5 February 2011 - 8:46am

Dear McAfee,

For several months now, you have listed my website as having been found to have "potential security risks" according to your "TrustedSource web reputation analysis" without actually enumerating what those security risks are.  I followed your instructions and attempted to contact you by leaving a question on your website.  It has thus far been ignored.

Now, for the record, I don't use your shovelware, but I imagine that when people who do use it come to my website, they get a scary warning message telling them that horrible (if unspecified) things could happen to them if they view my webpage.

So please, either a) tell me what's wrong with my site so I can fix it, or b) remove your ridiculous warning.

Thank you,

Bart K.

New Donation Goal: Rigged, Textured Drawf Wariror

By bart on 29 January 2011 - 10:34am

TheCubber has come back with another excellent model, this time a rigged, textured dwarven warrior.  The goal for this is $130.  From the email:

  • Textured and rigged – 4 objects
  • whole model 12 238 tris
  • body 5400 tris, 2k tex*
  • armor 4836 tris, 2k tex*
  • cloth 932 tris, 1k tex*
  • leather 1070 tris, 1k tex*

*tex - diffuse, specular, normal, ao, environment, sometimes paint :)

[...]

The model is very easy to customize (those prevs where done only by tweaking some parameters :)

As usual, TheCubber's work speaks for itself, so without further ado, the preview images:

Announcing Project DretchStorm

By bart on 13 January 2011 - 10:33am

My friend ghostshell from GameBoom asked me to pass this along:

Project DretchStorm is an FPS based on the Tremulous universe. The goal is to build on the gameplay of Tremulous version 1.1(ish) and extend its features and introduce new tech. A partial list of wish-list items include:

- new renderer based on xreal
- all FOSS-compatible assets
- assets that exploit xreal's capabilities
- ambiance music
- XP-based class system with research and achievements
- with a focus on high performance and presentation

At this time we are looking for anyone willing to help in all areas; 3d models + animation, textures, mapping, sound/music, ux and writting. The code will be GPL.

Browsing and Searching Improvements

By bart on 4 January 2011 - 10:40am

Hey folks!

Just a heads up -- when you browse and search art, you can now select what criteria you'd like to sort it by.  Sortable criteria are: post date, title, total views, and number of favorites.

I had to update Drupal's views module to 3.0 alpha in order to make this happen, so if you run into any weird issues, please let me know.

Thanks!

Bart

Next donation goal: Rigged, textured 3D Barbarian model

By bart on 29 December 2010 - 7:30am

Hey folks!  I've got another 3D model incoming.  The funding goal for this one is $110.
Here's what he says about it:
7366tris, texture [6 x 2k maps (diff, spec, ao, normal, paint, additional blood, +env)], rigged. Each part of model is separate object (to get the nude barbarian model, just delete armor etc. :) )

Sorry about all the downtime lately.

By bart on 28 December 2010 - 2:17pm

We're feeling some growing pains and we've got some database configuration issues that need to be addressed.  We're working on the problem, I promise. :)

Big Picture: CC, EFF, FSF

By Clint Bellanger on 17 December 2010 - 2:28pm

Making and playing games are great hobbies. On terms of global importance, though, these things are pretty small.

This week four important individuals became backers of Justin Nichol's Fantasy Portrait Marathon:

  • Mike Linksvayer, Vice President of Creative Commons
  • Joi Ito, CEO of Creative Commons
  • Lawrence Lessig, founding board member of Creative Commons and former board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation
  • Richard Stallman, founder of GNU and president of the Free Software Foundation

I'm thrilled that their portraits will appear as NPCs in Flare. In return, I support these important organizations and I hope you will as well.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) is an organization that creates art content licenses which allow creators to give various permissions to users. These licenses are a valuable part of our remix, mash-up, and sampling culture.

Electronic Frontier Foundation

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) fights for user rights the world over. They focus on issues like internet free speech, privacy, and fair use.

Free Software Foundation

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) promotes computer user freedoms through licenses that grant and protect freedoms, free software development, and campaigns against DRM and software patents.

OGA's next donation goal!

By bart on 14 December 2010 - 9:41am

If you're reading this blog entry, there's a good chance you've noticed we've reached out current fundraising goal to purchase the two excellent 3D models I blogged about previously!  I'm currently waiting to receive a check pledged in the mail -- once that clears, I'll make the purchase and post the models on the site.

In the meantime, it's time to put up the next donation goal: $200 for a double set of spell icons by eleazzaar (picture shown to the left is from the very popular first set, which OGA commissioned last month).  The new icons icons will include:

  • lightning

  • ice shards flying

  • boulder(s) flying through the air

  • entangling thorny vines

  • Beam of light  (all nine colors)

  • Speed boost

  • ~6 more sets (depending on number of colors)
  • Frames for the icons

Contributors of $40 or more may specify a spell idea to be included in the set (3 power levels, in 3 colors of the artist's choice).  We'll keep the list up to date as it's being expanded.

UPDATE: Here are some preview images from the next set, already in progress:
