I was actually researching the history of "Space Marines" and the term was coined in the late 1930's byRobert A. Heinlein.

Awesome. I'd love to see how it turns out.

If you need any other wood textures (different grain size, color etc.) just say the word. These were pretty easy to do.

I don't but its much easier than it might seem ;) . I created it using a program called Filter Forge.

If you are on Windows or OSX you can download the thirty day trial of the full version which gives you access to the full online filter database of filters. (the one I used for this texture is here (http://www.filterforge.com/filters/1383.html)

I'm no expert but, if you have any questions you can usually find me on the forums or on IRC.

My only concern with this idea is the difficulty in the API. Making the library useful to people across multiple game engines will be the tricky part. I think a thorough discussion of output formats will be a crucial.

for example if we want it to be able to export XML maps we need to decide how much variability in formatting we should allow. (to accommodate various use cases)
