Forgot to mention. The algorithm essentially does what Bruno mentioned, which is to layer correctly the transparent transition. I had pre-generated the texture maps to speed up drawing. In action games, and on a large enough map, drawing 2-4 times on each tile would drastically slow down the FPS. I'm now at 34x24, plus objects and effects, but pushing to four times that. On older iphones, it is already an issue. Essentially, I'm trading off disk space (which is cheap) for speed.
If you are working on turn-based games or strategy, then this is not an issue.
@Nemisys, portrait generator would not be as varied in posture as this. So there's a trade-off. Just to be clear, these are not my work. I have just commissioned them.
