"NESFeel" Art Challenge
Community isn't doing weekly or monthly challenges lately, so I figured I would go ahead and post something, no time frame and no winners.
Challenge is to create 2d art that either
a) meets or nearly meets nes specs (good overview)
or
b) "feels" like NES graphics
Make new art, or use existing art to make derivatives that have the "NESFeel." Since there is no "real" NES palette, choose whatever palette you want. I recommend Nestopia or NES advanced.
And would we show it here?

in my opinion the easiest way to get NESFeel is to make sprites limited to 3 colors plus transparency. if you start with that restriction in mind, even if you break every other spec of the NES you will still end up with something the feels NES-y. even if you start with that restriction and then break it to add in small details you will still evoke NESFeel with your base design geared around describing as much in 3 colors as possible.
but then, who the hell am i?
Thanks for the event!
I'll try to make something

it looks good.
I like the way you depict the forest here. It looks great!
Thank you for your kind words!
I've published the more-or-less finished tileset: https://opengameart.org/content/nestor-tileset
There are things that can be improved, and maybe I'll improve them in the future. But I'm more-or-less glad with how it turned out.
I've really enjoyed this art challenge. The 'no voting, no time frame' idea really makes it less stressful than some other events. And the NES limitations make it simpler to actually finish something. Thanks, Ragnar Random, for the event!
it just kinda jumped into my head that i could do this and noone would stop me :)
i'll think of another one with a theme or something
Hello there.
I do have some artworks that will fit this challenge =)
Here is an animated charater I created with the Nintendo Entertainment System color palette I found on Lospec.com. It really matches the hardaware's graphical constraints ie 3 colors + alpha per tile:

Also, for the 2022 Winter Jam, I worked on some monsters recolor using the NES palette.
Those does not conform to the NES constraint, but I intended to make them feel like NES assets, so I think they have their place here. It's a big pack of monsters, so enjoy!

Lastly,
Thanks Ragnar Random for those nice resources!
I would like to humbly add this video too :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opoQdHqGEHg
It explains how back in the day they achieve to have one more color per sprite for adding detail like the white of the eye.
So, as the rules are permissive, it would be ok to have an extra white color for the eyes on characters, as this was technically possible on the original hardware!

the nescolor monsters go with vampire huntress? your jam entry is gonna rock.
Hello hello,
Yes I created Vampire Huntress so someone could slay all those bad and evil monsters haha :D
I doubt I'll have a real game at the end of the jam tho, maybe something more like a light demo with basic features.
While I'm here, if anyone is interested to know more about creating art for the NES and the harware restrictions, I suggest to watch the NesMaker tutorials.
It's heavily engine oriented, but there's a lot of useful infos to grab there.

Hello!
Here are some creatures remixed from Redshrike's SciFi spritesheet. Adapted to the NES color palette. I tried to limit myself to 3 or 4 colors for each sprite in respect of the 8-bit constraints.
Enjoy!
