What do you think has the best potential with graphics like this? A clone of Super Mario Bros. like this, or one of Tower of Druaga?

I only played Tower of Druaga once, & didn't finish it. So, without studying it, I couldn't give you an honest answer. But I think this style is great for a SMB clone/remake.
I always wanted to make a Mega Man 8-bit clone.
Tower of Druaga in an insanely hard game, no wonder you didn't fninish it on your first try :D
I played it a lot on the NDS, actually.
With SMB clones the hard thing is really, suprisingly, the level design, I find, and I'm terrible at it.
And yeah Mega Man clones are definitaly a thing, I've also made one, featuring ponies tho.
What would your Mega Man clone be about? Would it be set in a particular universe?

If I made a clone, it would probably be a pretty simple one. No specific universe. Just Mega Man, 8 robot masters, & Wily.

And yeah, you can have many fun plots just featuring Wily.
