FLARE [ARCHIVED]

Contribute to flare.

Hello.

I have been thinking about trying to contribute to flare: want to do some modelling for it.

I have found this wishlist of tileset improvements: https://github.com/clintbellanger/flare-game/issues/15

But I guess, it would be right to discuss some details before actually attempting anything.

So, my question is: do you have any specific modelling tasks to do?

P.S.: don't expect from me to become a regular contributor. I just want to give it a try and see how it goes.

I am contributing code and programming, so I am not quite familiar with art. But in my experience it's best to start  with a topic you're interested in, so pick a piece you would like to see in game :)

In my opinion, flare needs more visual diversity. Therefore tileset improvements are a good place to start. Besides, modelling of simple static objects seems like a right thing to familiarize myself with a flare pipeline.

As for the specific topic - I'm not sure. They all are more or less equivalent to me.

As for turning 3d into 2d, there are a couple of tutorials on the flare page, that basically capture the process:

  • http://flarerpg.org/tutorials/isometric_tiles/

As for the link, it is better to wait for Clint's answer. Though AFAIK these issues are still relevant.

As far as I know the issues are still relevant, as noway said.
There have been no major art cotnributions for a while now, hence it's still relevant. :D

So I guess noway is starting with some simple static object for diversity? There are plenty things to choose from. Either very natural stuff in the overworld grassland tileset, such as tree stumps, old trees, or some manmade stuff like housing or other fences.

In the caves or dungeons there are also some interesting objects which could be made, such as constructions which help with stability of the dungeon/cave. These could be used very good for traps or barriers which appear once you have passed some point as in the cave east of the averguard dungeon.

i was thinking to start simple, the crystals, egg sacs and torture devices in dungeon tileset sounds good to me. For the others i would need some kind of concept, no matter its quality

It's a wishlist but would have liked to see a dungeon or something inside the place which is abandoned (the map which has the 2 flying dragons guarding the entrance.)

you know, besides crystals, egg sacs and torture devices which are quite common (in fantasy, thankfully) i could model other things, specially since they dont have the restrictions 3d models have and can be madde pretty fast, but i need concept art. If you can provide some of them, i can spit them at a good rate.

What do you think about this one? maybe with a flesh texture for the "skin", eggs can be made transparent and show a litle monster inside or colored with a bone like texture

Looks really awesome up close! The small one's hard to distinguish without color. I'd be interested in seeing it rendered with colors and placed next to the cave assets.

The eggsac is fun. It might be too much detail for a small tile size though. Perhaps a similar design with fewer bulbous parts, and maybe a more irregular overall shape.

If I were creating the egg sac I would animate it a bit -- make it pulsate at least.

I really like the new eggsack. its far less symetrical then the first design. really nice improvement.
