If I made a clone, it would probably be a pretty simple one. No specific universe. Just Mega Man, 8 robot masters, & Wily.
I only played Tower of Druaga once, & didn't finish it. So, without studying it, I couldn't give you an honest answer. But I think this style is great for a SMB clone/remake.
I always wanted to make a Mega Man 8-bit clone.

If you're really not comfortable with it then maybe you would feel better changing it. But, I think it looks fine. That's just my opinion though. :)
