Fundraiser for FOSS Music software Open Octave

KIAaze
Monday, April 9, 2012 - 10:46

The creators of "Open Octave", a project providing a collection of midi orchestration tools are running a fundraiser to add new features:

http://www.indiegogo.com/OPEN-OCTAVE-STUDIO-You-are-the-music-We-are-the...

Ironically, one of the features they want to add is Windows and Mac support. At least for once, it's not the other way around! :D

At the moment, it's GNU/Linux only.

The main software (OpenOctaveMidi) is under the GPLv2 license, while icon sets and a sample library called sonatina are CC-licensed.

Source code on Github: https://github.com/ccherrett/oom

Official website: http://www.openoctave.org/

Looks like a pretty sweet project.

From a personal perspective as a Fedora user, it would be nice if a precompiled Fedora version were available as well. :)

Regardless, best of luck with your fundraising and keep up the good work!

The following illustrates why I thought that this fundraiser was a scam. I no more believe that to be a fact. (I do find the "donate! win prizes!" practice questionable and I don't think the project is realistic but I don't think that the developers are scam artists)

I took a look at the file list on github:

This is a fork of actively developed http://muse-sequencer.org (edit: I said it was a musescore fork before - my bad). The fork was started a year ago. No changes have been made since, except an edit of a build script half a year ago (I checked the git repo mentioned in the first post here. apparently they use a different one, my bad!).

Time to WHOIS:

openoctave.org and wendycherrett.com are registered using domainsbyproxy.com. Kinda suspicious. (edit: on the other hand that kind of privacy-sensitive behavior isn't uncommon in the foss scene)

Who are the people:

Wendy Charrett is supposedly ( http://www.wendycherrett.com/bio.html ) a film musician but no actual films are mentioned. The only external link besides openoctave is to tsiware.com, also registered by domainsbyproxy.com.

On one hand ther character named Wendy Charrette has >2000 followers but these might be simple 'thanks-follows' as the number of people she follows is nearly the same. (edit: I had written something about "naive" and "christians" but I didn't want to attack a relligion but simply say that I felt that the naivity/good-willing of people of a social group (a group like foss-fans or left- or right-wing-followers) were  abused for promoting a product - but again, I don't believe this any more to be the case)

More...:

https://github.com/danboid seems to be a user that has been created for the sole purpose of creating (fake?) tickets on the oom project.

They lure with "win stuff if you donate" which is weird and probably counts as illegal gambling. (Turns out indie go go does not approve of such practice. However many other projects did this on the website, which served as inspiratoin on how to design this fundraising.)

I'm not sure whether this is complete vapourware scam. But the simple fact that there has been hardly any development speaks for itself.

Note: this is not a discussion about religion or politics.

I started realizing the realness of the project after I briefly talked to thomasbonte and lasconic on #musescore who are under the impression that openoctave developers are real people but also believe that the roadmap of the project is 'optimistic' at least.

Note: this post is supposed to have some -strikethrough- elements in it. But they are not displayed for technical reasons.

Hi qubodup,

Christopher Cherrett here, founder of The Open Octave Project

We are a fork of http://www.muse-sequencer.org/ not musescore. Muse Score is crossplatform and they are helping to promote us so that we can integrate/sync with their notation editor. Muse Sequencer only runs on linux. They were at one time the same program but split by the original developer into a midi sequencing application and a notation application. We forked the midi sequencing application that only ran under linux.

Also to note we have been developing our toolset for about 6 years now. We started about 6 years ago working on our tools in the midi for Ardour3 then moved them to rosegarden and finally to Muse Sequencer where we decided to stay and develop heavily.

As for not supplying any changes but a script, please refer to our publically accessible git repository here:

git clone git://git.openoctave.org/oom.git

Build the application and give it a go, you will find from our git log since our 2011 release that we are one of the most active Open Source apps around for development.

http://www.openoctave.org/git_log_feb28th_2012.log

As for the religious attacks, my wife has put up her whole CD for anyone to listen to here:

http://www.wendycherrett.com

So she has at least put some years of effort into some music :)

domainsbyproxy.com is the default domain information privacy service you get when you ask godaddy to hide your domain information. The fact that we register all our domains with godaddy and ask them to hide the information is ver common. We are not looking for people showing up at our house. We run a home based business.

You can find a little animation Wendy helped out with here. It was done as a demonstration of Open Octave's default instruments and we plan on giving out the files so others can play with it.

http://vimeo.com/30408572

We have been working on a film for several years now, Wendy is directing it. We developed Open Octave to facilitate creating the film through open source applications, such as Blender, Gimp and Open Octave Studio.

http://www.wendycherrett.com/bio.html The song on this page is an example of the VSL instruments that Wendy has mapped in her studio using Open Octave Studio.

As for your religious beliefs, all the team at The Open Octave Project are Christians. Not sure what else to say to you there that would not result in me defending my faith.

Thank you for voicing your concerns. Please go donate to our project. We need your help!

http://www.indiegogo.com/OPEN-OCTAVE-STUDIO-You-are-the-music-We-are-the-means

P.S. I wish Danboid was just made up! That guy can ask for more features than anyone :)

Christopher Cherrett Founder of The Open Octave Project here,

You are confusing Muse Sequencer and Muse Score:

http://www.muse-sequencer.org/ <- Linux only. the project we forked

http://musescore.org/ <- Windows/Linux/Mac notation editor

We forked the midi sequencing side of things that is linux only.

My wife Wendy is real. Who do you think made all the music on.

http://www.wendycherrett.com

As for film scoring work she has done. We are working on a film together that she is directing. But there are some smaller projects she has wrote scores for. One example is helping out a fellow blender user here:

http://vimeo.com/30408572

also the song on her bio page was a test score she wrote:

http://www.wendycherrett.com/b...

Thanks for pointing out our short comings in explaining our product. I hope you can get it installed when the first beta is out. Till then please fell free to donate and help us reach our goals!

We will be looking for builders on every distro once we reach Open Octave Studio 2012.1. We are about to go into beta 1 right away and will then release beta 2 and then 2012.1

So stay tuned and we will make sure you get the software in your distro.

Sorry for annoying you with these accusations and writing insults, I was overreacting and not investing enough work to reasearch. Please let me know if anything insulting is left in my posts still.

I have synced the github repository to our local as we planned.

I hope this reduces the level of confusion for users learning about us via github.

Sorry for the confusion there, we are moving very fast and working very very hard and some maintainance issue were missed along the way.

Again both git clone git://github.com/ccherrett/oom.git  and git clone git://git.openoctave.org/oom.git

qubodup,

Well it looks like you got our campaign suspended for having a draw. So much for coding non stop day and night to give the world the best DAW.

We are discussing not releasing to Linux anymore. I would point out that you are the main cause of that. Well you and others like you. The shoot first ask questions later crowd.

Wait, what happened exactly?

bart,

Someone complained we were having a lottery for our indiegogo campaign and indiegogo suspended the campaign.

They tolds us to update the campaign and go live once we take out all references to our draw. But once a perk has been claimed it cannot be edited except you delete it and loose all the associated money.

Judging by qubodup's posts today it was most likely him or at least a result of his actions that caused the suspention of our campaign. Funny thing is there are many many people running campaigns just like ours so we did not see it an issue.

So qubodup enforced the law today. Congradulations. I am sure the Linux world owes you a big one for possibly killing the best DAW it had going.

Man I am really not happy with this guy right now :)

I can understand why you're angry, but what does this have to do with Linux support?

bart,

Linux Audio has proved to have many of these types of attacks for us. I am not sure I want to bare it anymore. The Linux audio crowd is full of fighting and accusations very similar to what we got today.

We have been accused of stealing peoples code, not giving attribution, being scam artists and simply not existing. All by people who shoot first andf ask questions later. Sure people appologize, but how many times do we need to go through this?

I am all full of being attacked by Linux audio and other developers.

But by morning I just may decide to stick around and make it for the users.

Well, if you do decide to stick around, I'd appreciate it (particularly as someone who's into music composition and would like to be able to do it on Linux without a hassle).  It looks like you guys have a pretty sweet project going, and I'd be sad to see it go.

Note: we have been talking on IRC (#openoctave) about the situation some more

When I was still convinced, that the fundraiser was a scam, I had written an email to IndieGoGo (IGG), linking to this thread. By pointing their attention on the OpenOctave project, they decided to put it into "draft" mode, because it had a raffle in it and lotteries are forbidden by the terms of IGG.

After checking the search function, it seemed to me that IGG does not do much to stop the use of 'raffles' in IGG projects (unless their attention gets drawn to it?). I currently hope that they allow this fundraiser procect to finishand instead of taking down projects will instead change their documentation to make it more clear that lottery-like systems are prohibited.

Wow, things evolved a bit quickly here.

Thanks to qubodup for investigating things a bit, and to the developers, Christopher and Andrew for coming here to clear things up.

Qubodup might have overreacted, but at the same time, I think he was right to try to make sure it was not a scam, even though as you said, he probably should have contacted you first.

We are discussing not releasing to Linux anymore.

Please don't do that. First of all, it is the only platform you currently support. So removing support for it is kind of stupid and you will loose whatever users you already have.
Secondly, as estelar57 pointed out in the comments section on indiegogo, you stand a lot to gain from the open-source and GNU/Linux community:

And the target audience for the campaign is not only musicians wanting an affordable/free alternative, but also linux, open source advocates and contributors who want to pitch in (even if they are not musicians).

I am not a musician, but I am willing to support your project as a member of this community, looking forward to all the music it may lead to. :)

Linux Audio has proved to have many of these types of attacks for us. I am not sure I want to bare it anymore. The Linux audio crowd is full of fighting and accusations very similar to what we got today.

Well, for what it's worth, I (granted, not a member of the "Linux audio crowd") have advertised your campaign here and at http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2950
You are also mentioned on Ubuntuvibes, as well as here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1946197

Man I am really not happy with this guy right now :)

Somehow, the smiley confuses me here. ^^

P.S.: It looks like your campaign page is up again, no? Is it ok to donate there again or not?

KIAaze,

I really appreciate your efforts to help us. Guys like you are the only reason I would want to help out Linux anymore.

As for us gaining a lot from Linux community. I code this application for one user. My wife Wendy. It so happens that our use case is great for Linux users. I think this might be the other way around. Linux needs us. Guys like qubodup should pay more attention before trying to kill the best thing Linux audio has going.

I think qubodup was nothing but wrong in his approach. He caused a great deal of troubles for us. He is the worst investigator I have ever come across. It would have been so very simple to figure out who we were. Instead he emailed IndiGoGo and had us shut down.

The Campaign is back up and running. We had to gut the perks with any reference to our draw. I feel like a liar to my funders.

We will be looking to run our own fundraisers in the future.

bart, KIAaze,

We will be keeping Linux support. But we are very unhappy with qubodup and his actions. I am not even sure how to totally guard our project against such law enforcers. He admited to not watching the campaign video that was hosted by Wendy who he said did not exist. So he could not be bothered to look at our obvious content but he did have time to email indiegogo and have us shut down.

All that said I cannot justify hurting my awesome users whou are trying very hard to help us beta test and giving us great feedback. I also do not want to hurt new users that could discover music because of openoctave.

I guess I was looking to pass the hurt off to some other person. But in the end that is a very bad move. I am not qualified to execute vengance.

Sorry for the noise. It all just happened so fast and was so hurtful.

We will be releasing a beta very soon and I hope you all like it as much as we do.
