Those wily monsters are always building their villages all over the place!
On top of a firey mountain, down in the green, green valley, out in the frigid cold tundra, under the dry desert sky, or deep in a murky swap, those monsters will build anywere!
And now you can too, with The Monsters' Villages Construction Set!
Just pick from one of the many pre-fabricated 16x16 tiles and start building!
Or use the base tile system to create your own unique tiles. Simply select a wall base and combine it with a row of windows. Then add a roof with a chimney, some dormers or even a set of lovely bell tower pieces. Finally, apply your own custom paint job by running it all through one of the many versatile color re-mapping tools found here
(https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/tool-for-palette-swappingchanging).
This started as a very simple project to make a basic 'village' tileset for July's OGA Art Challenge and quickly ballooned out of control. What started as a simple thought: 'why don't I separate the windows from the walls so I can mix and match them a bit?' turned into a combinatorial nightmare as my programmer brain took over and forced me to write a program to produced all the wall and window combinations.
When I added the roof tiles complete with dormers, chimney's and bell towers, all of which need to be color coordinated with the wall tiles, the number of possible combinations absolutely exploded. So I decided to stop the madness and just pre-bake and handful of combinations and provide the base tiles so folks could
mix up their own combinations as they pleased.
Everything was done in the 6-bit Sega Master System palette and I tossed in some re-colored sprites from my Instant Dungeon! set to populate the villages.
Quick note about the base tiles: these are meant to remapped, so the colors in the base images themselves are sometimes funny as they are chosen to aid re-mapping by using a unique color set for each of the various ranges in the tiles.
For example, the base roof tiles contain some chimney's that colored the same as the dormers and which are meant to be mapped to the same colors as the building's exterior walls.
So, for example, a blue brick building will have a blue brick chminey.
However, the base roof tiles also contain some green chimney's. The greens are meant to be remapped to red brick, since almost any house will look sensible with a red chimney.
Would be delighted to hear of any use folks find for this stuff, so if you use it, please post a comment to let me know!

Wow, what an awesome set! You really make the SMS palette come to life. And I love seeing where the Instant Dungeon characters live. Looks like they have some peaceful digs when they're not at work :)
