What next?
I've got some free time and I just feel like helping people make games, because I want to play some good 3D FOSS games. I love RPG's but at this point I'm desperate. I'm going to model a whole building. Not a skyscraper, or some sort of time traveling army dispensing building with rigged bad guys from goo monster to final boss like buildings. I'm thinking, whole blacksmith maybe? Whole spaceship? "Whole" crack house? Throw out some ideas. Then I'm going to go through it and model things inside it needs to look full, modeling for a full 40 hours, then I'll texture as i see fit. I want to pick something we can all enjoy, or most of us at any rate, so I'm open to suggestions. I'll throw in the original texture sources in case you want to change something. It will be GLSL'd. The textures will be big, so you can work with them.
I'll throw in everything I can think you might need in the file, one .zip file. Since this is going towards specifically making FOSS games, it'll be public domain for some of the insignificant stuff, probably about 10%. The rest, GPL, probably 3. If you want something big and not GPL, I don't suggest throwing it in the pot of ideas. You'll just want to use it.
The only bad part is, it'll end up as one submission. Ha! You've got the until early the 31st to throw out ideas, let's say noon central standard time. My next day off is the night of the 31st.
3D RPG you say..
I think what comes closest to that is DungeonHack. There are a few concept sketches that could be modelled: [1, 2, 3].
Radakan's concepts could be used for inspiration as well, the game idea appears to be more of a text adventure/rpg with 3D view.
jClassicRPG could make use of buildings, but there are no specific requests regarding buildings (only a general request for tiles from which the engine can construct buildings).
PARPG is a 2D RPG in development that uses rendered 3D models. They're looking for war runis right now.
Hi,
That is the kind of post one likes to read :-)
Here are concept-arts that our main artist has done for buildings for a medieval 3D RTS game - not an RPG but the art is the same.
That wiki-page and the forum thread linked in it will be updated as he is still working on more and more concept arts (esp. stone buildings).
Hope you can find inspiration there and will have a lot of fun, whatever you model ;-)
I've snooped around DH a while back. It'd be cool to have them use my stuff in game. They seem really dead set on the lore issue. Sometimes, like in the NES days, you just got to wing it, and build and change as it goes on. But I do love some of their lore. And I did play the holy hell out of Daggerfall. I liked that concept of a tavern/thing. That's a possible there.
Doesn't this look familiar? JclassicRPG looks fun. And I like Radakan's buildings. They look really simple though, and I'm trying to make something that will push my talents. Also, I don't know what the hell I'd put in there. :I
Pompei2, how many faces are we talking here? As few as possible? I could make them, but they'd be outside only for you guys(?). :/ That's not to say someone else might not like the inside of them too. And don't you worry, I intend to have fun!!! I'll add the forge/smithy and the muiltplex house to the list of possibles. I can think of multi-useful items to stock them with.
Pompei2: a nice gallery of cute (because small :) ) concepts. I also didn't know arkana was a live project. The pages for the project really should be cleaned up (there are so many of them..)
Iconoclast: That was you? I don't keep track of usernames well :) I also like the kind of game development you describe, I wish PARPG would have chosen that path (I'm convinced they would already have some playable story by now if they did). I didn't know DH was lore-fixed as well, I thought only in love with procedural-generation. :)
No, that wasn't me, I was just noting another OGA artist'contributer was there. I'll have to find it again and see who it was. At first I thought it was you. Are you with any of those projects?
It was tidbit :) I write about many projects on http://freegamer.blogspot.com (I'm not the only author there) and I was the "lawyer" (license guy) of parpg for a short while. I also do web layouts (DH's, Radakan's and PARPG's layouts have been made or tweaked by me). I'm not in any serious relationship with any project though.
I made that, and many other things :) http://opengameart.org/users/tidbit/track
alot of the creatures are now animated, but am to lazy to upload them. but they are uploaded here: http://jcrpg.ath.cx/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=5
I am also making another object pack. this one has 50+ indoor objects: http://imagebin.org/82177
So have you every wanted an open RPG, with open settings that anyone can use in their RPG.
You can't use D&D, whitewolf, or gurps.
http://theonosis.com/ <-- this is it .
Welcome to Theonosis!
Theonosis is a collaborative storytelling, world-building and role-playing game. It is massively multiplayer, and allows anybody to play as large a role as they like in the creation of the world of Theonosis. As a user, you'll be able to play a god, imbued with power derived from the worship and admiration of mortals of all kinds. You'll scheme to expand your influence in the world, while defending against the myriad of dangers that threaten your existence. You can also help to expand and define the largest and most diverse fictional setting ever created, helping to set the standard for fantasy fiction in any format.
Theonosis is designed as a fantasy setting. Similar wikis have been created for FreeVerse, a modern and recent historical setting, and ThirdFleet, a science fiction setting. These two settings, along with Theonosis, are dual-released under both the Open Setting License and the Creative Commons license.
Looks like a great and growing world. The perfect world to start a New RPG in.
verbalshadow: your post seems rather generic. Interesting info about that free rpg system, but the request in this thread is "Give me ideas for modelling 3d Buildings". Is there anything like concept sketches or descriptions of architecture in the project you advertise?
Theonosis. That sounds highly decentralized. It also sounds like a terrible idea. I'm just lookign to find the most commonly needed "generic" assets for FOSS games.
I've never been into D&D, whitewolf, or gurps. In fact, I don't even know what the second two are. I know what D&D is because some of the folk I work with play it. (I make fun of them, in a barely serious way.) However, I welcome you to add ideas to the list. It seems like medieval is going to win. Which is fine with me. Tavern? Blacksmith? Stables? Barracks? Bad guy hideout? Tools, furniture, rugs, various doors, various windows, weapon racks, fireplaces, clothing, shoes, kitchen items, chests but not on elves, foodstuffs, kegs, wine bottles, training items, for some reason all I can think of is Ren fest.
Looking good tidbit, how long you been working at them so far? Are you working on any game right now, or just stuff?
Any medieval building would be fantastic.
Taverns are popular and an easy choice. Note that someone using it in a game would have to build a whole village of matching building styles. Depending on how detailed/technical you want to get, it may be better to build a stand-alone style building.
I think a monastery or adventurer's lodge overlooking a cliff would be rad.
Monasteries tend to vary from game to game. Some use actual religious influence, some use the nine divines. But the lodge does sound awesome.
I did consider growing it out, making a basic small town, in which I'm sure your parents will be murdered, where the resistance calls home, and you ended up in luckily/mysteriously, after some jail time... But I also will include the textures and some notes as to how I made the looks. I can usually figure out how other people did it, but I'm sure everyone will like the lack of guess work.
About "would have to build a whole village matching the style" - single inns with no other houses around are something that happens in games and movies (and books :) ) often.
Thanks.
3~ years blender. self taught.
4~ years GIMP. a very inactive 4 years though. self taught.
no projects, i only help. I don't join teams either. "I am only here to help.".
Damn, how I hate loosing a whole post right before saving it because of a computer crash -.-
Iconoclast: We're talking about mid poly things, that should be enough to add nice details. Usually there are not too many buildings shown at the same time in a 3D scene thus a building might have a higher polygon-count as a unit for example. And buildings have lots of rather big-flat faces.
For the inners, in our game we don't need them, but of course some other games might want inners of the building too, so just add them, If we use your models, we'd need to adapt them to the engine anyways. Of course, making a version without inside right away would be even greater :)
One very useful thing for most games I can imagine is (if you make common buildings like an inn or a simple house) to make variations of the building. Those variations should be similar in style and easily interpreted as being "the same thing" but still have enough variation to see that "it looks a bit different". This would make it possible to have lots of inns, houses, ... without becoming too boring too fast. Disk space and memory is nearly infinite for modern games.
Also, if you want to make models for more than just one game, you better not make highly recognizable buildings like a monastery. Such buildings usually have a strong link to a specific game (at least in the gamer's point of view.) Another suggestion for highly reusable buildings would be: walls, gates and towers.
qubodup: Thanks. Might you give me hints in how to cleanup the websites, or give me more insight on why it is confusing/unorganised? I woudl highly appreciate it as I got used to it, so unfortunately I don't notice such things. But if so, do it by private message or email to not pollute this thread.
verbalshadow: Your link does not work (in firefox) because it has a space at the end.
Medieval building, tavern/house. Stone base, wooden beams visible, wooden shingles not the same as the well.
I like these shapes/style http://images.travelpod.com/users/lroff/world_2006-2007.1155717360.02_me... (left).
I like these colors/shades http://graymonk.mu.nu/photographs/mainz_market/Assorted%20288.jpg (middle two).
I'm going to add a small pantry, second floor. Wooden floors on top two floors, stone on pantry. Small windows, a couple of different doors... and stuff inside. Let's get going!
