What kind of artwork do I need for this side scrolling game?
I'm creating a Cocos2d/Box2d side scrolling game for the iPhone/iPad and need a hero character but thought I would first find out what kind of art I need and whether or not I can do it myself using Opengameart models?
The game concept is based upon archeology, so an Indiana Jones type character would suit it. I also like the style of Devil Dark: the Fallen Kingdom.
The character needs to walk, dig, climb a ladder, use a pick axe and show some basic expressions. He doesn't have to be spectacular because his actions are secondary to the rest of the game (i.e., the stuff he finds on a archeological dig site). He may occasionally bump into a creature he has to fight but again it doesn't have to be spectacular. He will also need a shovel and pickaxe.
I can use Cocos2d actions and SpriteHelper to do the animations.
Any suggestions/recommendations are much appreciated.
Also, are there any restrictions to using Opengameart for a commercial project?
Sidescrolling? But archaeologists work on grids! And you forgot drink. Archaeologists walk, dig, and drink. Traditional attire is jeans, a tshirt, and hiking boots. Plus I'm wicked looking forward to the lab section - you should make sure that most of the items in the game are inconsequential until you run statistical analysis. Get art for a van and shaker screens.
I think I'm only half-joking.
More serious: Check out the site's FAQ, http://opengameart.org/content/faq under the header, "I'm a commercial (closed-source) game developer. Can I use this art?"
"It depends on the license(s) the art is released under. Technically all of the art on this site is legal for use in commercial projects -- however, some of the licenses require you to distribute the source code of your entire project for free, and allow others to distribute the source for free as well."
Lol! Thanks for your feedback.
Yeah just look at the license and obey it.
