[REQUEST] Retro City Rampage pixel art style placeholder art of person and car
I am thinking of trying to make some game or games that have people and cars in them of the same pixel size, perspective and general art style as Retro City Rampage. The details of how big the art in the game is were explained in this video. It's from a 3/4 perspective, the people are on 16x16 tiles and the cars are 48x48 for all 16 directions (it's fine if you can only manage 8 directions for now) Mirroring is OK which would drastically reduce the number of sprites needed. To be useful, these must be pixel-sharp, not blurry. Using a restricted pallette like the NES would be good too, because then I can decide later whether I want a wider pallete or not when I get more permanent art.
A pack of pngs was released with newer updates to the PC version of the game for modding purposes, but the game assets are copyrighted and the creator has stated that this pack does not come with permission to use them in your own games, not even non-commercially. This is understandable since he obviously does not want YouTube footage of your/my crappy amateur demo to be confused with his high-quality product.
But I'd still like to experiment with making something in the style of Retro City Rampage. Like a clone, in the sense that all platformers are Mario clones and all first person shooters are DooM clones. Clones like this aren't just remakes: they are different by adding more mechanics and having the setting be in a different genre, in a different century, on a different planet or whatever.
So it would be really nice if somebody could make a set of sprites that has the same dimensions, perspective and retro aesthetic that I could use, at least as placeholder art in my project. And I bet lots of other programmers would love to use some assets like that. I think this is one of those basic 2D game art categoies that is generic enough to apply to many projects.
To do this, I'd need at least one car and at least one person, at the sizes and with all the directions described in the video. Also, preferably another version of the same person holding a rocked launcher. That would be enough for me to get started with.
I can send you the pack of pngs for modding RCR if that helps. I don't think tracing over them to make your own people and cars would be copyright infringement - at least not at this ridiculously low resolution.
