Herodom
Hi everybody,
I have been busy developing my game Herodom, and finally I am reaching some state of almost finished with version 0.1 :)
The game is heavily inspired by the LPC assets, and uses a lot of assets from OGA.
I have created a website for Herodom here:
https://sites.google.com/view/herodom/home
It offers some extra previews, and moreover very important, a form to sign up for the beta test, which I tend to start somewhere at the end of November 2018.
Also it covers some of the intentions and the history I have with Herodom. As a developer, OGA and all the artists contributing here have been of incredible value to me and Herodom. I hope I can give something back. My intention is to invest parts of the potential revenue (potential, as making some money with games is not that easy anymore) in commisioned work to expand on the LPC set, and on OGA it self as well.
I hope at least some of you might be interested to join in on the beta program. I really need the feedback so I can polish and balance the game properly. You do need an iPhone, as Herodom is initially only available for iOS.
Please let me know if you have any questions, remarks or anything!
And of course again a thousand thanks to everybody here. In the game it self I made sure to have some extensive credits, the proper attributions and referrals and thanks to OGA and the LPC collections.
Might you have some suggestions on how and where I could promote the beta program and later on the game it self as well, please let me know. For me the marketing has always been my weak spot, so any help is very much appreciated.
Cheers!
Looks like it could be an interesting game, but yeah, no iphone here... :'D
Thanks Spring, that is really a bummer, you are definitely not the only one:(
But might it become a success, I will think of porting to PC/ Android! Or distribute some free iPhones over OGA users when it becomes a really big success! :P
the question is, if you're really wishing for this game to become a commercial success, why pick iOS as the starting platform for it?
Good question, there are a couple of reasons for this:
- iOS appstore generates (much) more revenue than google play. Even though there are a lot more users on Android, they tend not to spend money on apps (https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/16/apples-app-store-revenue-nearly-double...)
- iOS is 'easier' to develop for: less variety in devices, OS versions are much more synchronized over the active devices (users adapt quickly to new iOS releases, where on Android they can not always do this)
- Of course some personal preference also, I am a iOS developer professionaly as well, and I am very happy to work with the ecosystem.
Then you might ask, why not just build for Android AND iOS. Well, that is because this will still be a large investment, compared to develop for only one platform. Even when you might use some other engine like Unity or Unreal, it will still require a lot of testing on both platforms and platform/ architecture/ device specific logic.
Finally, I might consider PC. With Spritekit, the framework I currently use, I can easily port the source to run on OSX as well. For Linux/ Windows etc it will be different. But I think in essence, Herodom fits best on a mobile device.
So given these reasons, I opt for iOS first. Another interesting read on this:

I am eager to hear your vision on this!
Cheers
Well, if your main concern is profitability, surely there must be better ways to make money than trying to sell games....
On a side note, I find it very interesting that you think this is best fit as a mobile game, because it really looks nothing like a typical one, so bonus points for uniqueness there I guess!
Ahh no no don't get me wrong, it is not my main concern, I just love to make and play games. Herodom will be free for download as well, but has one IAP to buy the whole game. But I would like to make some out of it, so I can invest back in LPC/ OGA and myself for getting more time for game development
that is fair enough! might be a good way to get people interested. I like tower defense games and this looks promising, I wish I had an iphone to try it.
and I think some original art would help it along the way, even if it's a huge job.
Thanks! Yes I want to commision a lot on the LPC, I have so much ideas:)
One thing for example is a zombie body, it has been created partly before, and looked so awesome! I will look it up, think you will like it. And also I would like more city stuff, like Basto created a superhero a short time ago. And Wild West stuff, new weapons.. So much! But my own drawing skills are completely non existent, so I need some resources so i can commision the work to be done. Guess that is nice for the artists as well!

Spring you inspired me, I actually wrote out a request for it to be made based on commission:

Hey, cool game! Really excited to see some of the LPC art getting used!
I noticed you're using some of the art from my WIP thread https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/bluecarrot16s-wip-lpc-tilesetscollect... . I want to make sure the other artists who were involved get credit, so I'm going to try and "officially" submit the stuff in that thread this week. I would appreciate if you include that in your attribution collection https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-game-assets .
Personally, I also feel like the art featured on your website should be attributed on the website somewhere (I know you have a link to the collection, but it's not so obvious). I'm sure it'll be in the credits of the game somewhere, but it would be good for people passing by to know where the art came from!
Thanks again---looking forward to seeing how this progresses!
Hi Bluecarrot!
Thanks for your comment:)
Yes I do use them, the medieval decorations are majorly awesome for example. I was so happy when I saw those assets on your thread. If you indeed could make them official I will immediately include them in the attribution, sorry I did not think of this myself yet.
In my game I added the credits file, some links to OGA and the collection it self, and personal thanks to all the artists involved. I will post some screenshots here to show it.
It makes sense to put it on the website as well, thanks for the feedback. I will add it asap, hopefully tonight otherwise tomorrow. in the About section on the website, I do refer to OGA and the LPC btw, maybe you did not see that yet though. ( https://sites.google.com/view/herodom/about )
I added some screenshots to illustrate the attribution, let me know if you have any feedback already!
And also I updated the website: https://sites.google.com/view/herodom/credits
The beta for Herodom is now open to anybody!
You can use this link to join the beta program (iOS device needed):

Hi there, I have the pleasure to inform you that Herdom is now released to the AppStore!
You can find Herodom here: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1371997444
Now that Herodom is live, it does not mean I am finished with it:)
My next step will be to integrate a character generator into it, allowing players to customize their own characters. Therefore I will most likely going to do some additional commissions in the future to add on the LPC content. You will see that come by here on OGA ofcourse!
Hope you would like to give Herodom a try!
