Corrosive Caverns

Hi everyone!

So, in the latest couple of days I made a tiny little game about a (not anymore) cannibalistic flying pig. It's a WIP, but I don't plan on taking the project too far.

It's just as much a test of how GMS 2 works.

There is max. 10 minutes of gameplay to be had here, so it won't waste too much of your time :)

The controls are very simple, all you need to do to play is move around the mouse and the pig will fly in the direction of the cursor.  You will need to avoid the laser pulses fired by the two knights at the top of the screen. If you fly offscreen, you will come back on the other side, but also generate a large number of ice pulses which must also be avoided. However, you can also use said ice pulses to freeze the knights.

Overall, I found it was a fun little game for a couple of tries. But let me know what you think too please ^^ espcially if you have any ideas about how to extend it with more levels and such. Enjoy!

~Spring

Gave the game a visual update, moving it away from pixel art. This version isn't ready for download yet, tho ^^

The game was renamed to Corrosive Caverns!

I feel it's a bit more catchy ~ and the game will have a lot of underground parts, if I get that far with it that is.

The new version is still not ready for download, because I suck and am badly prepared as always.

Entertaining. If this was a snes game back in the day I would definitely have had it in my library even if its just a small simple game.

I dont know if your new version has these but you should consider a difficulty mode, full screen toggle option, and exit button all in a menu you can reach by tapping ESC or something like that.

I think with all of that, the game would be perfect. An interesting adaptation, if you made it into a mobile game and had tilt be used to control the character it would make a good addicting phone game as well.

Ah, thanks! This game actually probably belongs more in the snes era XD

I actually had plans to add more levels and such also.

My new version doesn't have these options you mention yet but they will be worth adding, except maybe the full screen thing, I don't think there are very many people who actually play windowed anymore.

But I have to admit that I am not interested in the mobile market though.

Been working hard on a new version for the whole day.

It's largely an experimental mess.

Changes:

  • New art style
  • You can now hold down the right mouse button to stop in midair
  • Instead of collecting food you are now assembling pieces of a weapon which can be used to destroy the ghost knights. You left click to shoot and the weapon is aimed in the direction of the mouse cursor.
  • Music changed, it's still annoying tho
  • After defeating the two knights the game progresses into two more levels, none of which are even close to finished, and can neither be beaten (press right mouse button to go through doors)
  • You no longer gain points just for surviving
  • You have a limited amount of lives instead of just one

I'm already feeling this project is getting out of hand after just one week...

Most actually enjoy a window option for small games like this. I enjoy it because I have 3 monitors and like to push things over to different screens.
Your project though so do what you feel is right. I've played your update and love the graphics! Even with the stop character button, the game in no more or less difficult.
Absolutely enjoy it!
Can't wait to see another update! good luck on your development!

What engine and programming language are you using to make this?

Thanks for your compliment! :3

I never considered a multiple monitor setup, because I don't have that myself XD But that is a very good reason to add windowed mode, I might work on that. I'm glad you like the graphics, I guess it is kind of a breath of fresh air to see something different than pixel art for one, though I don't really know. Even though my cartoon sketching tends to be kinda sloppy cx

I think I will try and make the next update a little larger and more fleshed out, to about the first boss (which I already have a plan for) or something like that. But I don't have a very good track record of completing game projects, of about 30-ish prototypes only 3 of my games have ever made it to a finished state. But we'll see ^^

Oh, and this is made in the new version of GameMaker. That engine gets bashed a lot I know, but I've been using it for many years and it fits very well to my purposes.

I like GameMaker. Ive watched that community since like the mid 2000s.
I at first thought you made your own OpenGL or DirectX engine since it seemed similar to one ive made but a lot of people tend to not want to do that because of how complex and confusing it can get.
I personally think Gamemaker is one of the best contributions to the game dev community ever made, lots of devs I know got their start in GM.

I totally get having the folder of forgotten prototypes. IDK how many games ive started and left for dead.

As far as this. I like the art style in level 1. I like pixel art and am making a pixel art JRPG at the moment. but i also like the direction your style is going.

Once again, Good luck! Hope you finish this!

Thanks!

I've also been using GameMaker for about 11 years now, it's crazy XD

And I didn't mean to bash pixel art at all, except for my own xD

Ah, I'm pretty sure that this error has something to do with the fact that you should delete your old save file.

It should be stored at <localappdata>/Pig_Game/hs.fn

In the future, new versions of the game will be made compatible with old save files.

Thanks for notifying me of the bug!

Just a heads up, I noticed later that there are many bugs in this new version.  But there was also a relatively large amount of content added at once :P

Thanks! I think this current one was a little bit too early out of the door tho. Learned that till next time.

Also, I know you're not my tester, but I wonder if you think the moleman stage is too hard, or any of the stages are too short?

I think it's ok if you can complete them in a minute or two. I reduces the chances of you getting stuck in one level and makes it less annoying to start it over from the beginning.
