Concept art need for Open Dungeons

Danimal
Saturday, October 8, 2011 - 09:35

Hello, the Open Dungeons project is in serious need of concept art and 3d models, while code has advanced a lot we only have a few models to use ingame. For that, we need first the concepts and eventually we will get the models done based on the best concepts. Here is the backstory for people with patience and a possible source of inspiration http://opendungeons.sourceforge.net/index.php/Backstory .The list of needed models is this(as well as some tips on how we would like they look):

Humans:
Scout:
- Wisp (flying ball of light, like Navy from zelda)

Weak fighter:
- Halfling, (The fatty short type that appeared in "Overlord" pc game would be great)
- War-Dog, like this guy http://www.mybuddydog.com/ddb.jpg and maybe armored like this one: http://privateerpress.com/files/imageca ... ar-dog.png

Weak spellcaster:
- Cleric, a medieval looking monk with a bit of armour
- Maiden,  noble-woman looking but a bit in the spicy side (big cleavage, split sides on the skirt)

Strong fighter:
- Knight, already have a model, thought it could use a total revamp(http://opendungeons.sourceforge.net/images/thumb/6/6b/Knight.png/250px-K...)
- Barbarian, We can use the one here in OGA, no need for concepts.

Strong spellcaster:
- Wizard, we have a model in the works, thought it could use a total revamp
- Fairy, just like the ones we are used to see (in fantasy or when smoking)

Guard:
- Crossbowman,  (reference: http://www.beneito.com/catalog/images/90-9-1.JPG http://www.paderos.com/images/product_i ... 3514_1.jpg)
- Longbowman, armed with a bow and leather armor (http://www.deviantart.com/download/1360 ... ngaren.jpg )

Weak builder:
- Blacksmith, the kind you find in every rpg village, musclebound and with a hammer

Strong builder:
- Dwarf, We will use the one here in OGA

Summons:
Angel, some kind of warrior angel

Super creature:
- King, a royal looking guy, cant say much about this...

Undead:

(we dont really have much guide to offer on this ones, in here are some images for inspiration, though the list of creatures changed to the ones below http://opendungeons.sourceforge.net/index.php/Undead_faction)

Scout:
- Flying skull, we decided on this concept (you can upgrade or modify it) http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/8402/skullfa.jpg

Weak fighter:
- Skeleton,  (battered and falling to pieces light armor (leather + chainmail))
- Zombie,

Weak spellcaster:
- Plague acolite,

Strong fighter:
- Death Knight, fully black armored skeleton, big ass but broken sword
- Bone golem,
- Ghoul, we are using the one here in OGA

Strong spellcaster:
- Necromancer,
- Liche

Guard:
- Wraith knight, a ghostly armored knight, without legs(floating) and armed with a scary crossbow
- Skeleton archer, squeleton with a bow, battered archer armor and a bow made of bones, coupled with arrows also made of sharpened bones

Weak builder:
- Enslaved human: decided on this guy, can use lots of improvement(mouth and eyes are sewn together, almost starved)

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/i356/Scribe123/OD%20artwork/undeadco...

Strong builder:
- Revenant, a undead version of a talented blacksmith (like Grisworld from Diablo 2)

Summons:
Atrocity

Super creature:
- Abomination, a horrible creatures stitched together of several corpses, does heavy melee damage

We know its a lot of creatures, but we are suffering from lack of content, so even just a concept on one of the creatures migth help. Thanks beforehand for your help.

I was pushing them to bring this to the OpenGameArt community, although I think they should be open to all concepts and not just the creatures listed above, although they are preferrable.

I thought this might make a good competition for OGA.

Perhaps tagging OD-specific concept art with opendungeons-concept would be a good idea?

The abomination should be much bigger and allot meaner, and probably less disgusting ;) a bit like these:

Thanks for the submissions!

Nubux:

Cleric looks really good.

Stone golem looks good.

I think the bone one might look a bit to much like "just" a skeleton, though the spikes are a nice idea.

Blarumyrran:

Wisp looks nice

Knight is also nice, but it could look a bit more bright, like a royal guard, and not the dark knight. I.e steel-coloured armor and not a black one.

Maiden should have a very fancy dress as danimal pointed out, the humans are supposed to be over the top upper-class noble people, though this wasn't clear from the first post here.

Halflink looks okay, we have another concept for it now though, that looks similar.

I don't quite agree with svenskmand about the abomination concept, I don't think it should look too much like the Warcraft-thing. I like the more slim design better, maybe it could be a bit more frankenstein-like.

I like the Wisp, I consider it 100 % done :D Very nice.

I think the Bone golem looks too much like a skeleton. The stone golem have a problem with its joins, it sort of looks like a stone robot :S The stone golem should look more like this one:

Regarding the Abomination my posted pictures are just suggestions. But I think it should be a large unit, and should also look very strong. Scribes concept gives me the feeling of pity for the creature. That should not be the case.

Yes I agrre with the remarks about the bone golem (the "stone golem/robot" was just a draw that I decided to keep because it could be usefull for somebody). I'll try to make a more gollemish  bone gollem and maybe a stone gollem if needed.

I added a necromancer concept art :http://opengameart.org/content/necromancer-concept-art-0

Thank you Danimal and Oln !

A new Bone Gollem concept art : http://opengameart.org/content/bone-gollem-concept-art

It is maybe a bit cartoony but it would fit for a game inspired by Dungeon Keeper.

Really good concepts! Hope to see more or see some 3D work elaborating on the approved concepts.

Maybe I missed this info somewhere, so feel free to post links. I looked around the Open Dungeon site a little, but didn't see this info anywhere that was blatantly obvious.

What are you looking for in 3d models? Any specific file format/program, specific poly counts, texture sizes/specifications, limited number of meshes per "creature" etc? If I make a model/rig/animation in Blender (.blend file) are you able to translate that to something that will work for your project? Are you looking for fully animated models, or models with rigs, or just models that someone else can rig animate? What animations would you be looking for (attack and run seem obvious, anything else)?

Not claiming I'll be able to do all or any of this on any given timeline, just wondering what you would need for something to be useful.

Hello, the forum is a mess rigth now since everyone is getting ready for the launch of a new webpage for the project. But this would be a guideline of what we need for 3d models:

- License: CC-BY-SA 3.0 Unported (can be disscused)
- Format: Blender 2.49 (because of ogre exporter)
- Animations:
Attack x 2
Eat
Die
Rest (lying or sitting)
Walk/Run
- Normal mapped or  ligth maps would be great

We need them to be realistic but colorful, maybe exagerating a bit some features(Overlord pc game would be the best example).

Over 4k or 3k polis would be good, we would prefer big detailed textures, since they can be resized later if needed.

If you decide to do one of the models, please post in the forum to avoid having duplicated work.

Just an addition to what Danimal said:

The license should be strictly CC-BY-SA 3.0 Unported, because having many different licenses is HELL.

I think we use 1000-2000 polys if I am not mistaking. The current texture sizes are 2048x2048, but higher texture sizes is of course no problem.

Regarding the look of the model then I think Dungeon Keeper 2 and Overlord are good examples.
