8bit resource request

i am working on a game engine / gaming API for linux (and possibly for windows but am focusing on linux currently) that is retro-styled / retro-themed: since my engine / api is neither genre nor game specific, i am looking for artwork that resembles 8 bit graphics (characters, sprites, explosions, cars, rockets, spaceships, monsters, dragons, bats, etc.) such as those used on the Atari 2600, C64, NES, etc... any image. any format. any style. doesn't matter if its for an adventure game (zelda type), platform (smb), racing (pole position), etc. (even Pong or Breakout) - anything yet something basic to get me started as i am sure that once i have a working engine i would like to include additional graphics with each update to the engine (or, better, just send users of the engine here).

as this is a personal project (open-sourced) and will be doing this on my own time (with limited resources, i.e. funds) am hoping anyone has anything they can donate to this project?

i'm not looking at making this the next killer game(s) engine but hopefully it will give developers a step up when developing games for linux, even though they'd be retro in style.

Why dont you consider joining another project?

For instance: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gorgon-ge/ The goals are the similar. Its not specific to any game, runs on Linux and Windows. Has its own resource and widget system. Pure C++ and few libraries that it depens on. And most importantly we have an open position for a Linux maintainer.
