An expansion or somesuch of the Simple Broad-Purpose tileset, an assortment of (static, for the moment) little folks of the same size as the heroes, to dispense fetch quests and single repeating lines of homespun wisdom, or be imprisoned in the bowels of castle Hrnghrphrhm. The visual style, like the original heroes, leans a bit more modern than fantasy, but I don't see any reason goblins and hoodies can't coexist.
I used icedman's random pixel characters as a base, most obvious in the children, which are practically Arne recolours of the originals. I also made some thought and speech bubbles to go with the characters, some idea effects to go with the bubbles, and a pants-shoes-and-a-streak-in-the-hair tweak of one heroine. Also, a dog! The latter two were easy enough that making animations of these characters seems like a doable thing, but I think I'll get back to my actual job for the time being. Though they do seem like they could use some accessories...
Releasing under CC-BY-SA because of the icedman connection, if another license works better I'd love to know
* Now under CC-BY, cause I mean, why not.
** Edited that one guy's helmet and some other very minor tweaks.

Awesome stuff.
Icedman is actually using CC-BY on those random characters you linked, so while it's fine to use CC-BY-SA, you can also just use CC-BY.
Also, very nice work. :)
Using this sprite on my LudumDare #32 game entry ;)
Thank you for sharing! I used this in Trump Jump: http://www.onehappygiant.com/trump-jump
