These are rough versions of gem icons I would like to use, for The Mana World.  I can't seem to get much input about these yet, so I'd appreciate any feedback :).  For what it's worth, I'm really not much of a pixel artist, heh. (And yes, the third gem is pretty much awful, I know :P).

Thanks to Clint Bellanger for good advice, and to redshrike, for providing an example edit I based mine heavily upon :).

Perhaps look at real-world cuts of gems to see how they're done. It's what I did when I made these simplified 3D gems http://opengameart.org/content/gems

You probably don't want to use dithering if possible (unless it's required for the Mana World style).

Instead of drawing the cut edges with dark lines, you might want to imply the edges by having a strong change in value between faces.

Thanks for the fast response! I've never tried to do gems before, even rough opaque ones, and this was done mostly at some god forsaken hour.  Dithering is not required for the Mana World, I used it mostly to get some rough look at it shaded, before a more experienced artist could give me some feedback.

You're definitely right about how to imply the edges, I'll take a crack at that now :).

Also, those gems you made are awesome!

Here's an edit for you.  I haven't done too many drawings of gems, but I do collect and sell so I have some experience:

It's kinda rough too, but yeah.

Suggestions:

Gem cuts are geometrically complex.  You won't be able to do it from memory or imagination; use photo refs.  They're pretty easy to come by.

As Clint said, avoid dithering.  Gems are complex enough that any added noise will just disrupt what you're going for.

Take your time, look at multiple photos, and play with it until it looks right.

Redshrike: I love your edit, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm going for.  I'll try to apply what you did there, and get an idea of how to do it with the others :).  Thanks for taking the time!
