N64 Medallions
An asset pack of icon images in the style of the temple medallions from OoT (Ocarina of Time), such as the Fire Medallion, Spirit Medallion, etc. The intended usage is as icon graphics in a retro game in the Nintendo 64 style.
This asset pack contains a series of medallion icons representing different classical elements, as the original OoT medallions approximately did. The icons are different combinations of elements, colors and image sizes, for developers to pick and choose as desired.
The style of the icons is a little "crusty", but this is deliberate so as to imitate the old Nintendo 64 style or Nintendo prints.
Just be aware, two of the preview images on this page are animated.
Elements
Each element is assigned an emblem, which is then overlaid on the basic disk of the medallion. Each element has a standard color associated with it, as it did in OoT, but in this asset pack all emblems/color combinations are available if an alternative color is desired, e.g. to depict an unusual element such as lava or slime.
The elements and their standard colors are as follows:
- Light (associated with time in OoT)
- Yellow
- Darkness (shadow in OoT)
- Purple
- Fire
- Red
- Water
- Blue
- Air (forest in OoT)
- Green
- Earth (approximately spirit in OoT)
- Orange
Sizes
The icons are produced in multiple image sizes (in pixel height and width). The first size is 1024x1024. At this size, the icons look like Nintendo marketing images or game manual prints. This might also be the size chosen for icons in more modern games.
The second size is 32x32. This is approximately the size of the medallion icons actually used in the OoT game on the Nintendo 64. However, at this size, the icons can be quite difficult to make out.
The third size is 64x64. This size is meant to solve the clarity issue with the 32x32 size, although 64x64 is not the size used in-game in OoT so this is a little less authentic.
Pack Structure
On the submission page of this asset pack are ZIP files named after the elements, which in turn contain subdirectories named after the colors, which in turn contain subdirectories named after the sizes, which finally contain the icon images.
Each size directory contains a series of frames of animation.
The first frame (0001) of each animation is the standard (static) icon image for that element, color and size.
The animation loops and can be loaded as frames into an animated sprite in a game engine. If an animated sprite is desired, I would recommend a frame rate of 12 frames per second and either the 32x32 or 64x64 size, as that approximates the appearance of the animated coin sprites in Super Mario 64.
Source File
The source Blender file is included, but I can't give warranty that you'll get much use out of it, as it is quite a complicated file, depends on a Python script for batch rendering, is not annotated for usability by others and the 3D models therein are not ready for export to a game engine. I wouldn't recommend trying to run the script, but you're welcome to study it regardless.
