:) A medal I made for a small war game. See the previews for the creation process. Some comments:
Using Inkscape and some openclipart stuff (ship http://openclipart.org/detail/25368/aiga-water-transportation-by-anonymo... and the wheel http://openclipart.org/detail/167462/ship-wheel-by-thebyteman) the vector image has been made. Then "Graphic Boost 2" from the GMIC's plugins (available for Gimp) has been applied.

You are welcome. It is not a tutorial but hopefully gives enough instructions on how to produce similar "medals".
