I think the samples are fine. They give the song an old school feel, which is actually a very useful thing to have for certain game genres. Furthermore, it's much more authentic to organically arrive at this result due to a genuine restriction, as compared to composers who will go out of their way to downgrade their instrument samples as much as possible to give them an "8-bit" sound.
You work with what you have, and use whatever fits well with the image for the song. Good job.
This was a direct inspiration for the song. It uses the limitations of the system to great effect and was something I was trying to do given the poor quality samples.
