Developing a game...

Hello all. First, this site is an inspiration. I've wanted to develop a simple game for quite some time now and I have always hesitated because I am not an artist, at all. The other day I decided to see if there were any open game graphics out there that I could use and I found OpenGameArt.org. I'm completely motivated now. I started work the other day on a browser game over at http://www.owbo.com/.

The name of the game is "OpenLands: Legend of the Silver Buzzard". "OpenLands" in tribute to the open nature of the content and the game itself and "Legend of the Silver Buzzard" is the name of a choose your own adventure story I wrote when I was around 10 years old.

I'm just getting started piecing things together, getting the various tiles together for the environment, getting the storyline and game play worked out in my mind, etc. I've already used several pieces from this site and I'm hoping as a first venture into game development that I will learn a lot and maybe even build something enjoyable to play. Anyhow, as I progress I will reply to this thread. Critique, ideas, etc are very welcome.

Thanks,

Owen Borseth

Sounds interesting, best of luck :)

Are you scripting it in pure HTML an JavaScript? Thats pretty awesome, can't wait for more games to adopt it

Thanks! Being my first game I'll need lots of luck.

The UI will be entirely HTML/Javascript/CSS. Eventually I'll try to get that all to work in IE as well but for now its faster to just focus on Chrome and Firefox. On the backend there will be PHP and a MySQL database.

I wouldn't say it is just luck you need. Efford and practice are very important. But I wish you good luck nevertheless!
