General Discussion

Attribution - please add a .txt File

Hey folks.

This is a call for everyone using a license that requires Attribution:
Please add a .txt file to your downloads in what way you want to be attributed in the final product. I think this would make it far easier for people that actually really want to use the work you submit.

Like this:

This work is protected by CC-A 3.0, if you use it please add this line to your product:
This product contains work from <Your Name> and is licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Or whatever you are comfortable with. If you really don't care, please consider the use of Public Domain :).

It is just a suggestion from me to the community.

I agree that this should be done. Ideally OGA would generate text files that list all licenses, authors, files and link to the oga page of the item and the authors' pages if available. Something like:

<TITLE> by <AUTHOR> <AUTHOR EMAIL> <AUTHOR OGA PROFILE URL> <AUTHOR WEBSITE>

<IF COLLABORATORS>0>In collaboration with

<COLLABORATOR1> <COLLABORATOR1EMAIL> <COLLABORATOR1OGA PROFILE URL> <COLLABORATOR1WEBSITE>

<COLLABORATOR2> <COLLABORATOR2EMAIL> <COLLABORATOR2OGA PROFILE URL> <COLLABORATOR2WEBSITE>

...

</IF>

Please give credit to the author(s) in your work using this game art.

The file(s)

<FILE1>

<FILE2>

...

Are/is available under the following terms

<LICENSE1> <LICENSE1URL>
<LICENSE2> <LICENSE2URL>

<IF LICENSECOUNT>1>You can choose either of these licenses or use all or combinations of them.</IF>

<IF NEWERLICENSESALLOWED>Newer versions of these licenses may beused as well.</IF>

Thans for using free, open source art. Please spread the word and contribute back by submitting art or donating!

It would basically be an export of the same data that exists on the opengameart drupal node to a txt file, which would be either generated after each edit of the file or each time somebody wants to download it.

This would make it easier to give credit and help spread the word as well.

Yep, because I downloaded a couple of files and now I need to find out which one was what etc.. I blame myself too but still, it would be easier if I had some file included that just tells me who the author is.

I generally rename downloaded file to contain author name and if its cc-by-sa or gpl I add this restriction as well. I generally treat cc-0 as cc-by unless author name is nowhere to be found.

What if I don't care exactly how my work is attributed? Mentioning my (real) name is enough, as I'm easy to find on the Internet; failing that, a link to the original material should do the trick -- someone actually did that for one of my tutorials. (Then again, resources on the Internet can move or disappear.) Does it really matter that much? On the other hand, you have a point about forgetting what came from where...

My main concern is about forgetting who made what etc.

It would be nice if you guys would just add a text file with a little text how you would like to be attributed and hey, it is a chance to spread your blogs and webs :D.
