This is a try to utilize LPC assets for sidescrollers.
The main difference to mountains is, that the height can be 2 tiles and more instead of fixed height of 3 tiles.
Based on dirt2, holemid, water, waterfall, grass and cementstair from original LPC assets
The preview also contains male charecter, bridges and the rest of waterfall from there

You think it would work to simulate depth or just have it be pure linear sidescroller? Given the limitations of the 3/4 view it might be tricky to handle depth...
I don't know if a sidescroller could work at all.
I started this to play around with it mostly.
Depth could work, but I think it wll look weird since 3/4 does not get smaller in the background.
There are also other problems:
could still make a Mario type
That's what I meant with "multiple, flying platforms"
It does not look, like the platforms are above each other, furthermore it would be pretty hard to jump that far
3D Mario games have a similar problem. You can ameliorate it by using things like shadow underneath the platform.
That the LPC sprites lack a jump animation is just a reason for someone to add one (I'd find a use for such).
I can see this being used well for interior depth not Side scrollers so much, but I have seen it work Kirby Superstar is a great example. I hope to make some Bionicle inspired stuff, such as temple interiors and homes for like Turaga.
This is how it would look like with shadow. The left character would also needed to be cast in shadow.
And there is a jumping animation by now: [LPC] Male Jumping Animation by Durrani
