Missing Link (due June 22nd)
How did we get from where we were to where we are?
Phase 1: Design a video game.
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Something is missing from the sequence. What is the missing link? Perhaps a resource you once knew about but now the URL has gone 404. Time to recreate it as something new! Make something that bridges the gap between two concepts. Or maybe there's some art you need, but can't seem to find. Create it yourself and share it around! It could be a song, a sound, or a 3D figure. It can be a sprite, a landscape, or a collection of power-ups.
- The submission with the most favorites by close-of-vote wins!
- Submit your entries starting Friday, June 8th, 2018.
- Have all your entries submitted by Friday, June 22nd, 2018.
- Voting closes one week after that on Friday, June 29th, 2018.
- That's two weeks to submit and (at least) 1 week to vote.
- Voters: You can 'favorite' as soon as you see a submission you like, but submitters: Don't submit before June 8th!
Be sure to tag your submissions with both a "Challenge" and "Missing Link" tag. Also, post a link to your submission in this thread as well. This art challenge leads into the OpenGameArt Summer Game Jam! There's bonus points for using art challenge submissions in the Jam. That includes anything you submit for this art challenge! Don't start coding your game just yet, but you can still gather and create the art you'd like to use in it. Try to make your art challenge submissions useful for more than just your own game, though. You can make it specific if needed, but it wouldn't really be sporting to submit things so specific that no one else could utilize them.

I liked MedicineStorm's take on "Left Handed Characters" as sinister. Maybe a theme could be "Mirrored Universe", where an existing asset is is taken, but swapped from good to evil, or vice versa. Modify a hero to be a villain! Or a UI with a light-color palette could be recast as a dark-UI. Or a major-key song put into a minor key.
@DezrasDragons: That's a good one! But let's just keep any left hand prejudice out of it ;)

The mirrored universe idea seems pretty inspiring to me. As for the left-handed implication that comes with it, I'd specify we're looking for truly left-handed assets where a simple horizontal flip of a right-handed asset doesn't really produce the desired result. I guess that's what Cougarmint was saying. Does a mirrored universe theme seem too unfocused to represent both the "sinister/unusual" and "southpaw" ideas?
--Medicine Storm*Nod* I think there could be a misunderstanding which is why I decided to make it more clear in the list itself by making it "left handed characters." Because sinister also means, well evil, and back in the old days, to be left handed meant you were evil in some way. -.-
But we could combine the two in some form, call it "Mirror Mirror" or something, in which you know, we can create opposites of things. Left handed characters, blue potions instead of red for health, that sort of thing.
I'm going to throw another idea into the mix: Free-For-All. Make anything you want, no specific theme, just letting your creative mind drift where it may. Just make it awesome. And make it a recurring contest periodically.

Sorry that I've been away for the longest time. Work has caught up with me and I haven't had any real ideas in a while, though I did find a 15 year old unfinished pixel art piece that I decided to finish! I'll be posting it soon. <3
