No offense, but I'm a bit surprised that after having posted a few requests for assets you haven't included the information necessary to help you.  At least the bare minimum:

size/resolution

medium (pixel art? painting?)

licensing

I've never heard of the game; generally, if you want a certain style you need to at least post reference pictures.  Make it easy for contributors to tell if this is something that they 1) can help you with, and 2) would like to help you with.  Don't make potential artists do the research themselves, most people won't bother.  On a subtler note, it also generally gives a bad impression of your project; the more information you can concisely convey in your request, the more focused you look, and the more chance people feel that your project has of succeeding.  Not everyone is going to know your history, and again most people won't bother to do the research.

You are right,  Redshrike. Even quick google search of "smugglers 2 game" images does not help much. A couple of images with 3d(!) ships only increases confusion. Also, it is interesting to know whether this game is going to be a free/libre software or a closed source.

Projects with good 2D images:

  • Naev (project)
  • Chromium BSU

Projects with 3D models you could render (with Blender) for your purposes:

  • Vega Strike (project)
  • Pioneer
  • Oolite
  • OpenParsec (project) - development inactive

Also a good 3D resource for creating a lot of ship models:

  • Shipyard 0.7 (example)

I'm sure there's more but that should help get you started.

Not to mention games like Iron Plague and Tyrian whose graphical contents have been largely open-sourced by Dan Cook (aka that one really awesome guy).  I should probably add an addendum to those three pieces of information I mentioned in my first post

4: tell us why currently existing FOSS assets aren't suitable for your project.

Don't get me wrong; they often aren't, and that's OK.  But it's also important for you to come in having done your research so you really know precisely what you want.

Have you considered just using the first one directly?  You'd need to make sure, but if it's produced by NASA they're public domain.  There are probably more pictures in that vein available from their site.

I think those are copyrighted images. I don't think those are by NASA, they were likely by a agecny making concept models and showed them off to NASA. any way you go, I dont think they are public domain. Would be nice if they were though lol

Mate, grab a copy of blender, grab a blender model from Vega Strike (there's plenty) and (using the gazillion of tutorials online) render it how you like.

People like to help those who help themselves.  1st rule of life.  The more effort you show, the more response you'll get.  (Tips on rendering, answers to Qs, or even eventually new content.)

Blend is 3d model making tool, I need 2d models. Plus Im asking here because I'm not a artist and I honestly dont have a desire to learn art. Im a programer, so most of my time is spent programing and researching physics.

There is no art in just rendering a 3d model. It is a purely technical exercise. A perfect task for any programmer who isn't excessively lazy.

Building 2D sprites from 3D models using Blender:

http://blog.gemserk.com/2011/07/20/building-2d-sprites-from-3d-models-us...

You can browse the Vega Strike ship profiles to see which one you want.  Then find it by name in the masters/ repo on Subversion.  Download it, open it in Blender, try the steps in the above blog, and you just made yourself a 2D space ship.
