planning game activity and age

Greetings, how do you write a video game's content and activity?
What is your consideration, between stories and characters, and gameplay,
how do you balance it for the player's entertainment and the game quality/quantity?
making it a hit and not draggy grinding
I just make whatever I want, relying on the feedback from others to shape the game after a basic idea is in place, instead of pre-planning everything. I'm usually not concerned if a game gets popular or has a lot of mass appeal, as long as the people who actually play it like it.
Cool! What do you usually want from a game then?
A prototype perhaps.
For something I would make, I usually just do it for jams and stuff, just for fun and because I have nothing better to do ^^ and I usually include my staple characters in some way.
For something I would play, it's not really all that much, either other people's projects here, and old stuff, but very few new commercial releases. Neither especially hyped for any particular title coming out ^^
