How to find game assets with a consistent style.

There are lots of assets on opengameart, but there isn't a way to find consistent artwork.  The only standard is the liberal pixel cup.  Even then it's not enough for most games.

Oh... based on the title I assumed you had instructions on how to find assets with a consistent style.

Was there supposed to be a question or is this more of a "want to know how to win? you can't!" sort of thing? :)

Here's what I do to find a consistent style:

  • Look for terms that match your graphic style: "Pixelart" or "vector art" or "cartoon".
  • Palette terms help, too. different art that uses the same palette tends to look stylistically similar. "DB32" or "DB16" or "NES" or 16-bit color.
  • If you like a set of art, check out that artist's other work. Art done by the same artist will have the same style. Furthermore, check the description to see if that artist was inspired by or derived stuff from other work. That other art is likely to be stylistically compatible.
  • If you find art in a style you like, check out the collections it's in. People often add stylistically compatible art to such collections, so there's a good chance you'll find similar art in any collection it's in.

Pepsi a lot of finding the right assets is just knowing what to look for. You really just have to eye it, but some things that may help are:

  • Knowing the different art styles that video games use, and which ones work nicely together.
  • check the pixel sizes of the images (16x16, 32x32)
  • try not to mix color palettes too much / keep a consistent palette

That's what I do.

You already answered your own question: "there isn't a way to find consistent artwork"

Good question.

If you want to use lowpoly stylized download from here and blendswap / turbosquid sites. Use  Blender and you need some conversion.
Currently I download files from these pages: blendswap / turbosquid / archive3d.net and I use qubicle (It's not easy to learn how to use a blender so I like qubicle and assetforge).

As others sort of mentioned, I would say the best way is to find an artist who has the style you like and look at their other work. I understand what you mean though. When I was creating a bunch of pixel art assets for one giant submission, I kept pushing myself to add as many useful things as I could. I wanted my submission to have enough art to get a person started on a game without having to look for more art assets. Some other people post art packs like that as well.
