excellent! i love all the additions, and i will incorporate all of this into my riding! I am also working with sanderfrenken at getting the ride animations (including all this) into the github/generator so people don't have to worry about the calculations if they dont want to
I would like to humbly request a mane/tail for this set like this one: https://opengameart.org/content/unicorn-2
Other accessory suggestions (in order of difficulty): reigns, jousting lance, horse helmet, saddlebags, carriages/carts/wagon/yolk, pegasus wings that flap. I have been trying to make a lance unsucessfully, but I may be able to adapt an LPC helmet to the horses (the horned one). The rest is firmly outside my skill level. My reigns look ok but I can't seem to animate them correctly. I know that's asking a lot but a bear can dream.
Again, great work and I can't wait to see your finished riding animation and all the other TODOs!
Excellent work BenCreating! This is beautiful. This it what I love about open projects. We can take the work of others & expand on it when the original authors may not have the time to do so. Thank you!
@bigbeargames: I hope to eventually animate the pegasus wings that I added. But don't know if it will happen. I've been so pre-occupied with other things. The original CC0 vector image is found here if anyone wants to go to the source.
@BenCreating: When you make significant updates to this, if you like, post a comment in the Bump Requests thread & an admin will look it over & possibly move it to the front of recent submissions. :)
Also, if you want to animate my pegasus wings, I won't require that you attribute me (though it is always appreciated). The source is CC0 anyway, & the work that I did on them is relatively minor. I think the south-facing wings might look better with an angle change, more of a view from above, looking down on the top of the wings rather than the bottom.
This is amazing! I love it! I'm glad you made modular variations on the mane and tail colors, and I also like the face variations a lot.
As far as the animation, your walk looks much smoother---particularly the front legs. I really like what you did with the mane and tail as well---they look a lot better with a bit of motion.
Personally, I think you were a bit too aggressive with the hind legs; I know the front hind leg looks like it bends backwards too much, but a horse's hind leg actually does that! At rest, the humerus point slightly anteriorly , while the olecranon process of the horse's ulna protrodes posteriorly, as in this image. This makes the leg look bent at the knee/elbow If you look at an animation of the walk cycle, you can see the the hind leg is always slightly bent. In your animation, I see you left the background hind leg bent, which looks strange to me because it moves totally differently from the re-animated foreground hind leg.
One thing we could both improve is adding a bit of motion to the rest of the body (especially the rump)---look at the latter part of the video I linked above, and it seems the rump bounces up and down a bit. Likewise, we could probably make the shoulder move a little bit with the legs. It's tough with only 4 frames...
@bluecarrot16: Glad you like it! I am planning to continue to improve the animation as I update it with other things, so I'll make sure I take another look at the legs. I did experiment with adding motion to the rump, but I wasn't getting very good results, and it creates issues when when you want to put a saddle or other accessory on top.
@bigbeargames: You'll be happy to know that I have begun work on a rainbow mane/tail set. After that, I think saddlebags might be next.
Reigns and other head accessories I want to wait on. The more I see the horse with a rider, the more I want to adjust it to match the same cartoon proportions. I'm going to experiment particularly with the head proportions, so I don't want to start drawing anything new that fits the head quite yet.
Yeah, the head could use some work... it's too small and kind of the wrong angle/shape. Excited to see what you come up with!
I've adapted your sprites for my rider, and they look great animated! Just wanna note that for all of the gallop assets, the down-facing sprites are all shifted 1 pixel too far to the left (easiest to see near rump). Also I find for animation in-game, all of the up-facing sprites in every cycle should be 14 pixels higher.
Thank you! I'll put those fixes on the list for the next update.
I haven't had much time to work on this the past few days, but I did experiment a little with a larger head. Critiques are welcome.
I think overall this is an impovement. I like the style. I'm not much of an artist, but it does look to me like theres some roughness on the diagnol slope (left side of head). Perhaps you can smooth that out? I love the changes to the ears, and how the mane comes through between them more clearly.
heres a preview of my rider on your horse. my computer is not the best so the framerate is less than 60. I also haven't finished synchronizing the framerate of the animation to the actual speed. How does it look to you?
I like the new head. Looks great. But I can't help but feel that something else looks out of proportion now. Maybe the rump, or legs?
@bigbeargames: Love the preview. :)
Another attempt at playing with the proportions. I've increased the width of the legs and made the horse a bit fatter.
@bigbeargames: That's fantastic! Though seeing the transition from gallop to walk at the end, I think I may need to make trot and canter animations now.
I think that looks good :). But I'd like to hear the opinions of bigbeargames & bluecarrot16 as well.
Maybe the tail could be a bit bushier too.
That looks great! I agree the tail could be bushier. Trot and canter would be amazing! I hope if you do that deep you will include instructions on best use of transitioning from cycle to cycle as well as ideal framerates
Thank you for the great art work on the horses. Some time ago, I made a small game using your art. Feel free to try it! https://rpgmaker.net/games/13049
