BoundWorlds - A Collaborative Multiverse World Editing Online Game (Legendary Dungeons Update!)
Hey everyone!
I'm making a game with an extremely flexible level creator. It basically allows players to create their own games within the game, which can then be linked together using "Gates". It's kind of like a user-generated metroidvania. Players can also upload images and sounds (there is a built in "credits" system that allows uploaders to link each resource with one or more original creators and provide links to their websites, which will be used to auto-generate a credits reel at the end of a "quest" showing everyone who contributed to the experience), as well as program and export objects for use by other players. The idea is that people with different game making skills (art, music, object programming, level design) can each contribute a little bit to the game, and explorers will encounter the works of different users as they explore.
The game is here for those who want to check it out.
You can explore without signing in, but you will need an account to save items or edit worlds. I suggest newcomers try out "Lusuria and Trial Dungeon", by Kamani, or "Mountain Village Bumigan", by me.
Note: I or other players may upload graphics or music from this site, associating it with the proper author in the credits. However, the person who uploads a media file has "ownership" of it in the game, that is they are able to edit its description and credit info (other people can still use it, provided they mark it as "public" - which they must do unless they actually created it). If anyone signs up and sees their own work already uploaded, let me know and I will designate that person as the "owner" of the file.
Pretty fun game, but the controls are very difficult to figure out imo.
Updated the main post with basic controls.
The controls may change if you transform (it is possible to create new playable characters) but the new controls will appear in the corner of the screen.
This is pretty interesting! Somehow I turned into a giant spider and was able to spawn spider babies -- that freaked me out a bit as I'm afraid of spiders lol. Like the concept and the gameplay so far.
BoundWorlds has been steadily growing in scale and scope. Recent updates include flash effects, item shops, and a flowchart system for easily generating dialogue trees and cutscenes.
Auto-credit reels coming soon. A preemptive thanks to all CC artists who contribute their work to sites such as these!
I suggest new players check out "Axis of Protea" under the "Explore" option.
Is there a tutorial for creating worlds? I just seem to end up with a blank black slate

The "About BoundWorlds" link has a tutorial to get you started. Some of the newer features aren't written yet but you can import packages and view or copy the items inside as examples.
Also if you hover over most options you get a tooltip explaining what they do.
BoundWorlds continues to grow. In addition to many general QoL improvements to the world editor, we've got an improved cutscene system and the ability to modify the inventory of individual sprites (generally for shopkeepers or chests). Some more helpful packaged classes as well.
I've uploaded some new videos for those who prefer to see the game in action. Check it out.
BoundWorlds has gained its first significant player-created world (not counting my own creations), and it's a nice one. It's called Lusuria, and incorporates a city of monsters, a dungeon with puzzles, enemies, 3 bosses, and a nicely fleshed-out cast of characters. It was built by Kamani, a player from the Bay12 Forums.
As for new features, there are plenty. Auto-credits now work, so artists will get properly credited for their work in-game. There's also a new combat system that incorporates knockback physics and knockdown effects, inspired by old-school beat-em-ups. Or you can ignore those options and keep it pure action-RPG.
This is turning out interesting actually.
I might want to make some RPG with this sometime, it could be better than my own game maker based RPG framework.
Would love to see it! BW is mainly designed for making "short story" games, or multiple short stories that are linked together, so it's ideal if that's your goal.
I guess that could be a project after I'm done with Kymiball ^^
I've been steadily updating BoundWorlds with new features. Wind physics and the possibility of a party system are the latest additions. I'm building a world with an extensive plotline, and adding new features as the need arises. In the meantime, feel free to add your own creations to the multiverse!
In addition, we now have a Discord server for discussion, bug reports, and showing off your worlds! Check the main post for the link!
Haven't posted here in a while, but BoundWorlds is still growing, and lots of assets come from OGA.
I've made some new videos, check them out!
I recently added a package to BoundWorlds that will make creating dungeon-type areas a lot easier. It's called Legendary Dungeons.

Also, a lot of other improvements and updates have been made.
