First somewhat serious attempts at making an orchestral theme
So I was inspired by Viktor Kraus' amazing piece "The Summoning" to try and make an orchestral theme of my own, even though they are not at all the same style.
I'm totally new to the genre and would love any sort of input from anyone!
Right now the song is not finished, it's very all over the place and I'm looking to connect the various parts better. Please let me know how I can improve it and extend its length. Or if I should just stick to chiptunes :P
Thanks,
~Spring

Did you really just start working on that after listening to my track? That means you're very, very fast :D That it inself is pretty impressive. I like you're work of different contrasts. (I especilly like the part were the tuba plays and then the whole orchestra follows and it repaets itself) Some melodies of yours are better then others in this track. But overall that is pretty impressive and the orchestration is also pretty creative, my first orchestral tracks were really terrible with orchestration. If I can give you a generell tip regarding staccato samples though: Have every other note a bit quiter and always the one the strongest and loudest regarding velocity. It is hell to programm that, but it sounds waaay better. If you wanna keep doing stuff in that style, I can recommend you this forum http://scoringcentral.mattiaswestlund.net/ There I learned a lot about that stuff and the community is very helpful and they also give tips on where to find good samples :)
Cheers!
If you need more specific input, I can give it a relisten.
Thanks so much for your comments!
I am pretty fast yes - not "very, very fast" though, this is more of a quick doodle than something with polish.
You are 100% right about the staccatos, that i will implement if i work further on this piece or decide to make a new one with orchestra. And i really appreciate your comments about my creativity, having a distinctive style definitely means something to me. I think my biggest issue is patience so to speak, i work too little on one theme before suddenly transitioning to another, on the other hand you said you liked the contrasts, so it might not be a bad thing.
I might check out the link when I get on a better pc.
I think that all depends on what you're trying to convey. I like the harsh contrasts here, but they're defintly not right for every mood. If you wanna explore that style more, you could try to challange yourself and write a piece of music that is as contempt as can be without being boring. Something more serene. I think the important thing is that there is some connecting element and you got that with that theme from the beginning, that keeps on reoccuring.
Hmm yeah maybe making a sort of cute theme could be a good challenge.
Yeah sounds good, go for it :) I'm looking forward to hearing the results.
Here we go. ^^
