[ASSIGNED] Pixel art 32x32 character review and animation
Hello,
I have started a couple of months building an RPG Action game (hyperlight drifter, crawl, moonhunters looklike) and even if I can manage all the programming required I lack time and experience about Pixel Art.
I took some classes but it's really matter of time for me as I am doing it as an hobby aside my main work.
If satisfied of the final outcome of this project I'll push it for publishing so consider that this handout is for COMMERCIAL USE and it that case you will figure naturally in the game if you wish when it will be published.
I wanted to start an offer by revisiting the current design and animations I made for the main character:
Standing sprite in attachment
32x32 design, representing a plague doctor, no skin or arms has to be clearly shown (lore reasons).
I also made the running animations (up, down, left and right) for 12 sprites per direction and I'd like to revisit those too for making them more fluid especially for the leg work and the mantle movement. I can provide those too in PM.
After revisiting the existing designs and animations I'd like to request for attack animations.
Resuming:
- 32x32 pixel art
- revisiting existing general design of the character (standing image as a reference)
- revisiting the 12 sprites running animations (will be provided in private)
- new animation for melee attacks, 3 hit combo, slashing animation looking like a claw attack (4 sprite per attack at minimum) using always the right arm so left and right would not be the same transposed images
- new animation for ranged attacks, 3 hit combo, throwing animation looking like he's throwing something (to not include in the animation but think something like a knife, it will be coded, 4 sprite per attack at minimum) using always the right arm so left and right would not be the same transposed images

You can as well mail me in private (fgrecucc@gmail.com) if you want to make a complete proposal with paid rate and delivery model or just if you need more informations. If happy of the results I'm up to reingage the same artist for further art for the game, let's say this is a investment test. :-)
I'm up to pay 200$ for this job in entirety upon delivery and satisfaction, open for trading prices but in pm or this will becomean auction house :D . I'll pay by each delivery described (revision, melee attack, ranged attack) or full in the end as you prefer.

Sounds very complicated, but I'll check it out when I'm done with my current commisssion. ^^
In the meantime, do you perhaps have some concept art of this character I can have a look at?

It's the edo guy. I probably made the description more complicated than the reality XD.
Resuming i just want to revisit the design (shape, colors, open to suggestions) as it doesn't convince me completely but on the right track.
Then to the same with the running animations (I'll post them in a couple of hours) and two attack animations: one for a claw attack and one for throwing stuff.
Just enough frames to make all fluid

What is it about the current design that you're unsatisfied with? It looks pretty good to me.
The problem as far as I can see is actually not the character design imo, more how your pixel art style is similar to something seen in many other recent indie games.
Oh concurrence is not a problem i am addressing. I just really like the 2d flat character with minimal/0 shading with really good animations and if it's the current trend.. well be it ^^. If I have been corrupted by this trend doesn't mean I am not open to suggestions to make it more unique :D
I think i am a little bit concerned about the colors as i am partially colorblind and wanted to have a second opinion on the overall. As said, I am open to suggestions anyway ;-)
I think the colors look fine, but I might have given him some heavy boots, since the legs appear kinda thin. I would probably also bend a corner of the hat upwards like a slouch hat:
Right now it looks a bit much a Stetson I would say.

maybe, but I think plague doctors traditionally have straight brimmed leather hats.

finally made to my computer at home. Just had the time to record these animations for rights and here you have them.
I took days to make them as I am really slow and I'd like to have a second eye on them, and like before, open to suggestions/improvements.

They look great to me! I especially like the downwards walking one with the very smooth animation !
The upwards one looks kind of like he's skipping or tiptoeing.
I honestly think you should do the graphics yourself, you definitely have the talent, and you would save lots of money with could be of good use elshwere in the game's budget.
Well I really didn't expected as much appreciation being a noob XD.
In fact the forward is the first one I made, the downward the last one, I guess I improved a bit.
I should review the fwd one my self I guess when I have the time for *Sigh*
But I am still stuck for the animations attacks. I have lost one week of evenings without something I'd define acceptable. Hence why asking for help for more experienced people.
I'd retire the proposition on remake the existing sprites, but I'd still pay to make the attacks at an adjusted rate if strill interested
Ok, I'll try it, but it's not sure you'll find my stuff acceptable either, your own animations are actually quite good, so if that doesn't cut it I think you have pretty high standards, or you just need to believe a little more in yourself. ^//^
I think this looks ok for a slashing animation, even though some frames are copypasted, but I don't know what you think.

Some details i can manage by my self but would you mind making the slashing white bigger and more in front of the character? Even if it's disproportionated to the character. I still need to have a hitbox contact to the enemy sprite. As a combo the third hit you can make it bigger then the previous too. But man you made in an hour something i have not managed to approach in a week.^^

Yep, way better. I am looking for now from the phone, but still way better. Consider the distance from the character and the "shockwave" with similar dimension and distance for each direction and we are good.
I can also see that I made an oversight, his cape is supposed to have a vertical stripe down the middle :P
Fixed that by just very quickly drawing a couple of lines, I'm not sure how good it looks.

Well, I'm not even sure I'm gonna do the rest, I was thinking you could just get this one as a freebie. ^^ Like you say, I am a bit busy right now, but if you still want me to do the animations you need when I'm finished with my current commission, I will definitely consider it ^^

Nope... just waiting for you. I had people contacting me but I was already sold by your first animation.
Resuming:
- Melee attacks (like discussed before)
- Ranged attacks (same)
- Can you review the upward running animation ^^ being the only thing remaining from the first request I guess
and I'd like to ask for another animation as well if possible (we arrange the payment accordingly of course) which would be the death animation.
The doctor suit is some sort of shell of the being inside so I'd like to have a dying animation of like the guy inside disappearing and the suits just falling on place like if the interior just desappeared (again maybe I am describing it more complicated than it is). Ask me for clarifications if I am not clear enough ;)

I'll try to answer as soon as I can always but mind that during the day (GMT+1) I'm at work and expect my answers more in the afternoon/evening ;)
