Need Artist(s) for an RPG
Sunday, November 19, 2017 - 11:58
I am absolutely horrible at art, and I'm diving into the game creating blind. Any kind of help would be nice, but for now I'm in need of an artist or a couple of artists for the game to create exclusive art (that I'll think of during the game process...)
The game will definitely be on PC.
The game is being worked on in RPG Maker MV, to give you an idea on what the game will probably be like. I would use something else, but that would cause me to have wasted eighty dollars, so RPG Maker MV.
You will be paid once the game begins selling.
Are you sure your game will even be able to sell?
Anyways, what is the art style are you looking for? If it has to resemble the RPG Maker RTP, I won't be the right person to go for :P
And yeah, what's your storyline actually, I would be curious to know? I like JRPG's with quirky storylines :P
Probably not. But I do believe in miracles... and advertising. I put some thought in this, however, so excuse the long typing here.
I'm unsure what RTP means at the moment. After looking it up on Google, however, I'm gonna assume it means the images within the maker. It doesn't have to resemble those at all. The format of the sheets is the only thing that really matters, I think. I'm quite unsure at the moment about the style. The things that I'll expect from the artist is a tileset, multiple NPCs, and enemies (just one image and a transparent background).
The storyline is really (AND I MEAN REALLY) complicated. I don't really think about how other people think of my stories, and it might be full of cliches. There are six to nine playable characters (still thinking of the use of three of the characters) named Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Black, White, and Gray (names subject to change).
I'll only put the origins first. It can change, but this is what I'm going with for now.
At a young age, Red and Orange escaped from an orphanage by destroying the place. No one died, but the possibly paranormal sights of "a boy of aura" and "a girl of fire" gave the witnesses something to never forget for the rest of their lives. Yellow's parents (Orphanage workers) left the city on the same day, leaving the little girl alone to never know what really happened. All she assumed was that they died because of the children of aura and fire.
Around this time, "Subject Verde" has escaped from his chamber. The boy was considered a major threat, due to the venom that secreted from his fingertips. Countless amounts of staff lost their lives trying to recapture him, leading to two other subjects (Black and White) escaping without being detected. Green eventually found his way out, and began casually walking away from the lab to go somewhere else.
It was an eventful day, for some reason, because a third and fourth incident occured. A bank was in the middle of being robbed, with Violet and her brother (Indigo, not important) among the people who soon became hostages. Green found his way to the bank, staring at the men with curiosity fueling his mind. The men focused their attention on him, and began shooting. Green is meant to lose, acting as a distraction while the hostages escaped. When he gets shot, the venom in his body began wrapping around the wound, resulting in a sudden awakening while everything was in chaos around the bank.
Finally, it was Blue's birthday. His grandmother decided to visit for the special occasion. However, he ended up seeing his grandmother arrested. The police were active because of the bank, and some managed to be alert and see Blue's grandmother - who was charged with murder for no explained reason. The young birthday boy refused to speak to anybody, going to his room for the rest of his birthday.
This was complicated.
Yeah this is kind of a complicated story, and I don't see all too well how the different chapters tie together. It kinda reminds me of Heroes in a way. (the TV show)
But if you have a long game it would be exciting to have the plot unveil slowly, to give you sort of an "aha now I know what's going on" experience. Still, it's nice that you've put so much thought into it, just be careful with setting the bar too high on your first game, which I understand this is. (correct me if I'm wrong)
I think you should change your character names, but like you write yourself these names are only supposed to be placeholders. I think the first two thigs to think about when deciding on a character name is:
1: Whether the character is male or female
and 2: What country she/he is from, since that'll likely be the two most important factors in deciding his/her naming, at least in a realistic setting on Earth ^^
To be honest sales do not matter too much for me either. The main reason why I always ask this is that I don't like to work with people who have unrealistic sales ambitions or are only interested in making easy money, but you seem quite down to earth and accepting of the fact that this may not be a commercial success, or even generate much of a profit, so that's only good I think.
Regarding the art style, making RPG maker tilesets for newer versions of the program is a major major pain, and I can't figure out exactly how to do so tbh, characters and enemies I would say are not too hard though, of course it depends on the style you want, but if it can be anything I can just pick a style I'm comfortable with, if we end up deciding to work together that is. One thing I will say though, is that there any many free graphics on this site which are excellent for RPG's, probably far better than what I can do, most of them have a medieval fantasy theme to them though, with your game I'm imagining a more modern-day setting from your story snippets. There are still good resources for that here, but a slightly more limited selection.
And yes RTP means exactly what you're saying, it's the images in default RPG Maker Style.
Do you have any concept art for your characters?
These chapters connect in a part of a story that I'm still thinking about. It's a fast paced introduction with a mixed speed of connection in the time after this chapter.
Red, Green, Blue, and Black are male. Orange, Yellow, Violet, and White are female. I mentioned a Gray, but didn't think much of her because of complicated time reasons. Most of them are American. Red and Orange don't exactly have parents to prove otherwise, so they're pure Americans. Yellow's mother was French, and her father was from New York (specifying this because of stereotypical reasons), Green originated from a German lab before a transfer, Blue's grandmother is Korean, Black's orignally from Australia, and White's a British child. Violet is an American that was raised by a Japanese mother and a Chinese father, so I'm deciding on either she's adopted, or her mother had interest in an American upon arrival.
I did say that I was awful at art, right? Concept art ends up horribly for me, especially involving characters where I initially imagined them as their colors in unclear human shapes. All I really have that comes close to concept art are worded descriptions of them that I thought of in my head. I don't feel like spending a lot of time typing them in this comment, and I'm still unsure about how your style looks, but if you're interested in the descriptions, then I'll put them in a comment.
(also this isn't my first game. it's only the first that i put effort into.)
So you want to see my style before you feel like describing the characters to me?

I have a DeviantArt page that has some pixelart if you dig deep enough, most of it is pony and furry stuff tho, but you can still get a general idea of how it looks from there I guess, otherwise maybe you could describe just one of the characters, and I'll try and make an RPG maker character sheet of her/him. Is there any particular dimensions you would like the characters to be in?
Well. Your artwork, while it consists of ponies, actually fits well in what I'm trying to do.
I'll leave the measuring to you when you work on the sheets. Also, after consideration, I kinda want the characters in Sideview battler mode, so there's that for the sheets.
I'll put this comment here and type the descriptions after this comment.
Thanks - just to clarify, is it 2003-style side-view battler or MV-style (MV, right?)
If you don't specify any dimensions for the characters, I will just make them the same size as the RMMV default ones, if that's ok? It means you can test them more easily with the default tiles.
Also, for this battler mode - should I make them naked like the default ones, so you can replace equipment on them, or should they just be wearing whatever their overworld sprites are?
RPG Maker MV, and the sizes can be the same. I could also use a couple of generic NPCs for the overworld, matching the style of what you create with the main characters.
I would prefer it if the battle sprites are what their overworld sprites are. RPG Maker MV, to my capabilities, doesn't have something that allows the replacing of the equipment.
OK then, let's start with one character for now and see if it's something you can really use first ^^
Tbh I hadn't really committed to making NPC's and stuff also yet, and it's not that I don't want to, but I need to get the style on point first, and we should also clarify a bit about your game and what you expect from me as part of the team first, hopefully you understand ^^
I've been typing all eight. Please be patient with me, since I'm going all out instead of being individual.
Well you're the only one who decides how quickly you want to answer. Just take as much time as you want.
From shortest to tallest. The color placeholders are actually what their color scheme is. The color fits with their eyes, hair, and part of their clothes. The parts that I don't specify in the descriptions are things that you can think of, since I don't have any concept art and I've been looking for an artist to establish their looks for me. Also, I've included what their weapons are for reference when you're making the battle sheets.
These descriptions are actually pretty basic.
Orange's hair is long, with one long ponytail hanging on the right side of her head. She wears a sleeveless shirt, brown shorts, brown gloves, and red boots. Her attacks surround gloves.
Violet's hair is short, in general, with a magenta ribbon on her head. She wears a dress that goes a little bit past her knees, and she wears sandals. She owns a cane in battle.
Blue, who wears a navy blue cap, actually has brown hair. However, an entire half of it is dyed blue (Your choice on if it's the right or the left side) after the birthday part. He wears a light blue shirt underneath his dark blue parka jacket, his pants are a little rugged, and the footwear he has chosen appears to be blue loafers. In his hand is an axe.
Yellow has medium length hair with the hair in front pushed to cause two longer locks on the sides. She wears a white shirt, a yellow skirt, a red scarf with two ends, and yellow sneakers with white socks. She owns an archery bow.
Red's medium length hair is mostly neat, with two spikes pointing upward on the front. He wears a red t-shirt with a white spade on the front, blue colored pants, and black shoes. He holds a sword.
Green is the tallest of the child characters. He wears glasses, a white eyepatch (Japanese) between the lense and his left eye, and there are two versions of Green's shirts - a gray tanktop (Lab Subject) and a green hoodie (Rest of the Game). His pants are half black and half dark green all the time. Green owns a gun.
I don't have much thought about the styles of Black and White. However, they are adults, Black owns clothing that fits with a Grim Reaper look, and White owns elegant, Japanese style clothing. A version of them (lab) should have tanktops, as well as half black and half white pants (Matching Green's half black and half dark green, but with their color schemes.). Black owns a knife, and White owns a spear.
Reminds me of the power rangers... :D
I'm not too sure what a Japanese eyepatch is. But I will do one of the characters, Violet, I think, then you can see what you think, and then we can go from there.
Also: what are the characters skin colors? Since they are American they could be either black or white.
The Japanese ones are obviously supposed to be Japanese I guess, in anime that equals to pale white as you likely know ^^
I refered to it as a Japanese eyepatch because that's the only time I've ever seen the style. It's that square white thing with strings going four diagonal directions across the face.
They probably are Power Rangers, just more complicated, has less plot armor, doesn't feature giant robots, and they're sometimes not the good guys.
Everyone's pale white. I feel culturally insensitive, but that's how I've imagined the characters.
Pretty much every anime does the pale white thing, so there's no need for you to feel especially bad about it I would say. If even at all
Mhmm, alright then. Feel free to notify me when you're finished Violet.
