General Discussion

Good resolutions for backgrounds and textures?

I'm experimenting with some backgrounds and textures that I think may be good enough to submit....are there any recommended resolution/sizes?

I'm assuming I should probably do the backgrounds in a 3:2 ratio but not exactly sure how big is too big or how small is too small?

Same on seamless textures - make them larger and let others resize or make them to the size that I think looks best?

Thanks in advance.

There is no recommended resolutions/sizes. What is "good" in this case is very subjective. It all depends on what they are being used for, which on this site could be anything... Generally, textures have dimensions that are powers of 2.

I think with 16:9 being the standard for wide-screen displays these days, that would be a much better ratio to use for backgrounds to fit well. If it's a raster image you have drawn, you could upload the original and let people resize it to their needs.

Stay a while and listen.

Desktop backgrounds usually 1920x1080 its the most used resolution.

And textures depend on pixel density in-game later. I usually make textures most times in 2048x2048 since that is the biggest I can make from a photo, otherwise you have to compose multiple images to reach 4096x4096.

So 2048x2048 or 1024x1024 is fine for most cases, you can still scale it down if needed.
