Simple Site Improvement - Add More Rows in Latest Art

Hi,

As I submit new Art and it gets featured in the "Latest Art" field it happens quite fast that my art is no longer featured.

Imagine this:

One artist submits his art. It gets featured.

Another artist has lots of arts he wants to submit too. So he starts to submit all one by one in the same day. What happens is the art that was put by the first artist is moved out of the Latest Art field. He had no chance to promote his work or make it seen. And I can imagine that he is a little bit annoyed about this.

What I want to say is that more rows in the latest art field (currently 4 ) gives higher chance to be discovered. I think more rows would make a lot of artists here happy because for most of us its the only way to feature our art. Thats why we love opengameart for..

So my suggestion is:

Add more rows, double it, make 8 items visible, make 12 items visible, or make it like a slider so people can see the latest 20 items for example.

Just my thoughts. What do you think about this idea? Do you agree?

When you click on latest art link, it will bring up all art that has been submitted recently.:) I think in the profile you can select what you want on the home page when you sign in, so if you want to not see something just uncheck it, that may leave more room for featured art, I haven't checked it myself but that may work maybe?

I'll second MoonStar's suggestion.  I don't know that it needs a slider or anything too fancy, just adding another row would be great.

The problem MoonStar describes is real and we've actually had an issue in recent memory where a problematic user was dumping submissions onto the site crowding out new work by other artists.

I understand the problem, I disagree with the proposed solution because whether you show 8, 12 or however many items, it's not scalable. The effect you describe can still happen.

A better solution, I think, would be to limit the amount of art that is shown by any one artist. Say someone submits 10 pieces of art. The 3 (say) most recent show up, along with a link "more recent art by this author..." that shows all of them. A refinement would be that if art is in different categories, you try to show range by giving preference to art from different categories over just 3 art entries in the same category. That's harder to do automatically though (maybe if you base it on tags). Both the amount of entries to show and the time when you no longer list things as "more recent art by this author..." would probably need to be tuned.

OMG! I never clicked or even thought that the label is clickable.......

All I asked is already implemented. I feel so dumb now :D

Thanks for the info anyway.

if you click the 'latest art' text it will show all artwork that has been submitted recently up to 20 pieces being shown, plus all the filters if required, so personally I don't think it needs changing, maybe knowing that the text is clickable might be useful.

not sure about the limitations on submissions though, taking up all the featured space on one persons work would seem a bit greedy, so perhaps maybe consider other users when posting,on the other hand if an artist only plans on using the site once a month or can only use it once a month and has lots of work to share, maybe it's more productive for them to do it all at once. I don't think it happens that often, and when it does perhaps it's just unlucky for those that have posted, then saying that there are a lot of users here posting new work so the chances are your work won't feature on there for that long anyway.

maybe a timer? So everyone gets a period of time on the front page and then it moves on to the newest work, think that will just cause clogs thou.

just my opinion :)

Another related issue is that there is just so much needless padding around each thumbnail (also the site in general).

By minimizing padding could easily fit another coloumn without widening the page.

By minimizing padding and puting the title over the top of the thumbnail could easily fit another row without increasing the height of "Popular" and only increasing the height of "Latest" by a little.

I'm not so sure that reducing the padding is a good idea. Obviously you can fit more content on, but I think it will also make the page look too crowded.

It rather depends on the day and time, sometimes the new queue seems to move at a glacial pace. If we set it to 8 items it looks like nothing ever changes at those times.

I started work on a redesign where i changed the padding, and I believe Bart already did a heap of work on a redesign as well. I am guessing Bart was hoping to work on the redesign and release it if the patreon funding ever became high enough to allow him to spend more time on it.  As it happens, the patreon funding has stopped at about a tenth of what it would cost to have a full time dev, which means we haven't got the planned redesign either.

Just a thought, I'm not sure how much time is needed or money lost taking the time to do any necessary update and changes, perhaps someone could come to a figure, then maybe All of us that use OGA could host an event to raise that figure, a game jam maybe or something else relevant to OGA and its users. I know patreon would be the answer to hit that target and have someone fulltime, but maybe something like this every now again may help.

however I would urge all of us to donate $1 to the patreon campaign, there are many of us here that benefit hugely from this site, and I don't think $1 is to much to ask to keep this great site running and make it better for the future, we should hit the target no problem.

But if you click 2-D art as a category, which is usually what I did because the rest interests me less, the More option always defaults to showing the oldest stuff instead of the most recent, which made that feature useless to me because it was always old, old stuff instead of new stuff.

@dannorder:  Yeah I see what you are saying, does seem like defaulting to a 'sort by date, desc' would make sense, especially if you are coming from the 'latest art' page.

Just want to say I support this idea.  I've definitely had songs submitted that probably had potential but were buried and not given attention because I submitted them at the wrong time and other art immediately overshadowed them.

It's not really a "must have" for me, but if people are uploading their hard work for free, it seems fair to give the artists a good chance for their work to be seen.

There could even be a dynamically-sized section labeled "Art submitted today" or "Art submitted this week," which shows everything submitted in their respective time frames.  It could be put at the bottom of the main page, or really just its own section somewhere else, since I understand keeping the main page free of too much clutter is a priority, and if nothing was submitted that day, it could be hidden so as to not make the site look barren.

That's just my two cents.

I have made the following changes:

  • Home page - Latest art expanded it to 8 items as requested - may as well see how it goes, though I can already see a cross over between latest and popular, which is quite likely on slow weeks.
  • Home page - title link is split out into "view more" to address concerns that some visitors aren't noticing the links. also makes the titles easier to read. - I am a little concerned it adds clutter to the page.
  • Latest art page - "view more" link now correctly takes you to the latest art of that type.
  • Latest art page - "view more" link moved from bottom right to next to title to match the home page - also decreases screen space used by each element
  • Main menu "browse" links now take you to the most popular art of that type.
