General queries about art from here
Hey All,
I had a few general questions for the community if you have a few minutes to spare.
Basically, I work as a software engineer and studied games programming, I would like to do some game programming and perhaps make something for commercial release in my spare time. Don't worry I am not asking for a volunteer to do all my art or anything. I read the stickied threads in that section :)
So yeah, my questions:
- Once I get to a playable demo with programmer art and if I am sure it is good, if I wanted to get better art. Would an artist rather be paid in cash or would they rather get a share in the commercial side of it. Say like 20% or something like that.
- (This is just an example) Say I wanted to make a small demo of a 3D rts, take say Warcraft 3 style visuals/quality models for example. Take 1 basic level, 2 hero characters. 4 unique buildings and 4 unique units. What kind of price would something like this cost? I just want to get an idea of pricing is all if I do want to buy art :)
- Say I am thinking of doing a Kickstarter to fund the art and I want to use art from here as placeholders. What licences am I allowed to use? With permission ofc. I just don't want to use art I am not allowed to. :)
Sorry if these are silly questions, I just want to make sure I know the answers correctly to save confusion later :)
Thanks,
Gerard.
Im a 3D artist and I do a lot of free work in my spare time for studying and experience. im 14 but I have about 3 years experience In 3D design and modeling. then 6 years in Game design. id gladly help you out with your RTS. for the cost of the demo your talking about I'd estimate it widely from free to 150$ (depending on your skills and what you can find.) if you go on turbo squid or something like that you can go in the hundreds or even thousands on assets.
An artist would mostly like to get paid per model or asset, but since you're probably targetting indie artist it can go anyway, because I normally et paid at the end of my work and after its released. if the project fails then Ill still have a payment number in agreement so i dont get ripped off. but thats only on rare occasion when I need extra cash.
For Assets you can use from the site you can use almost anything, as long as its not released to the public or anything, in that situation you might need to link the work back to the artist in credits or something like that. You can use Public Domain for anything though. with GPL you pretty much do what the artist wants you to do in a way or credit. you can or cant modify depending on gpl3 or gpl2 or on what the owner says. with CCby you cant change, modify or do anything with it and give credit with a link (link for some cases)
“with GPL you pretty much do what the artist wants you to do in a way or credit.”
No, the GPL comes with important conditions, the only way to know them all is to read the license: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl
All licenses on OGA permit:
- use in any way
- modification
- verbatim redistribution
- modified redistribution
- commercial usage
- selling
Haha. you probably have more experience with GPL than me. i said said what expression it gave me. I really dont recognize it as a major license so your probably right about this. ^-^ sorry all
Hey there.
Ok thanks for the information. Very useful to have, Especially the ones about the licencing :)
Thanks,
Gerard.
