Gyro Games Recruitment
*We ask that you please read this whole article before asking questions. Any questions asked with the answer clearly stated here will result in us redirecting you to this post.*
Who are we?
Gyro Games is a small independent studio having been founded in August looking to create a 2D RPG Game for players to enjoy that we will be selling so royalty's for your work is POSSIBLE but not garuenteed.
Currently our studio consist of myself (Nick) and a good friend John (Composer). With our knowledge we want to recreate our team and try tackling another game. This game will be called Crystal Dungeons and is essentially similar to Final Fantasy. With a free roam aspect and turn based combat. There will be items featured, levelling, player stats and much more!
Most Lores/Storyline have been written so mainly the art/programming is what we need.
In the future projects will include crowd funding, sales and profit. Therefore joining now means you’ll be helping create your future income so don’t be afraid to apply now!
What do we need?
For this project (and probably more) we are accepting a sort of internship. If you are interested in working with us but for only a project or two then please indicate that in your email, if not I’ll out right ask. Otherwise feel free to apply to our team and become a part of our Studio Gyro Games!;
Also note I am willing to be a reference for your future work/jobs so if you only stick around for one project to use me as a reference go for it!
Concept Artist
Currently at Gyro Games we seek one-two concept artist. Your main role will be to create just the basic concept ideas are characters, terrain, items and other art elements within the game. You also may be ask from time to time to aid in the creation of the games art if progress that week is slow etc. If you’re willing to do concept art AND actually game art then please indicate that in your application. *Definitely a bonus!* Working in a team environment is greatly needed as a concept artist and being able to be vocal/creative about ideas.
2D Artists
We are currently looking for two 2D artist at Gyro Games. In the past we saw the hard work it is to create game art and for one artist it is A LOT of work. As a 2D artist you will be creating ALL 2D art in collaboration with our second 2D artist. You may be asked to do some concept art before heading into your task but we hope this isn’t too much to ask. You must be able to work well in a team and also independently. Following a timeline and dedicating to your work is something highly expected of you.
Seniority may be given at a later date to a 2D artist, this will mean not only you lead the 2D art process of future games but you also receive a higher pay, essentially you become a manager of the art department.
Programmers
Gyro Games currently has no programmers and this creates a GREAT opportunity to attain some cash later on. With a highly innovated and creative team we will create a lot of great work in the future which means if you start working now for free in the future you’re guaranteed a secured future income. As a programmer you will need to be able to work in a team environment as you will work closely with more than one programmer, currently there will be two of you. We will be using Game Maker as our engine and GML as our coding language. Please apply and indicate your current coding languages. Like the 2D artist there is the position of Senior Programmer to be promoted too at a later date but with both of these positions you will not be chosen because you’re the best at your job, you need to be able to work as a leader and a team player. You will be expected to be vocal both previous and during your position as Senior Programmer. The pay as Senior Programmer will also be higher than a regular programmer as is the pay for Senior 2D Artist in comparison to a regular 2D artist.
Community Manager
A community manager is definitely a great job. Getting to work with a gaming studio to just promote their game and create a great community for their games. This position will be highly valued by myself and you will work very closely with not only myself but the entire team. You must be a very vocal person, great with your words and a VERY out there person. This position has no promotion guarantees but as the name suggest you’re the “Manager” so you will be at the top of the community branch even if it is only you at the moment. You will be given the higher pay over any other future Marketers/Community workers. But like all other jobs listed your pay is only in future projects. This project is free to play and will most likely not create any profit.
Communications Manager
A Communications Manager will work side by side with myself and the Game Designer. You will be expected to be a great time management person, a team player and a vocal leader. In this position you will relay information between our branches, input what we should be focusing on and overall help with the competition of this project. Along with this you will be the face of our company, in future deals, publishing’s etc. you will work with me to secure the best benefits. Like Community Manager you will be a Manager and when an income is secured you will be paid higher than any other Communications worker.
World Designers
We are currently looking for one-two World Designers. As a world designer it will be expected you are highly innovated and creative. Being able to create some abstract work that is not only fun/awesome but also unique. A senior position is possible for this job but only in the future once a pay income is secured. As our world designer you will be working closer with our concept artist, 2D artist, story-board and Texture artist so it is expected you are okay with working in a team environment.
Texture Artist
One texture artist is being hired at this time, we understand the great deal of work you will be putting in but with so many positions we will only expect you to create texture art and nothing more unless you’re willing to do more work. You will work with all the art departments closely along with the story-board to ensure you both have the land/world looking like it is both written and envisioned. A senior position is possible for this job but like the rest only once a future income is secured.
Web Designer
While this position is NOT currently being accepted we encourage you to email me with your application so in the future you may join our team to create a wonderful site to show off all our hard work and a place to display our future work! No senior position is available in this job simply because we will only have one web designer for a long time yet once we can rent a website/domain.
Voice Actors
While voice actors are not desperately needed at this time they are still nice to have and if you’re interested in voice acting for free at this time then feel free to join in! You will work closely with the story-board/other voice actors to create some nice monologue for our game and in the future income is possible for games.
Music Composer
While this position does already have two composers my philosophy is that we are always hiring and if you’re interested in joining in on our studio for free I’ll definitely consider you! Please not that your work will not be independent even if you are the one who creates a track. In most cases you’ll work with the other composers to create a better joint piece along with working with the artist/story-board to create the right atmosphere. A senior position is available at a later date for this job so work hard and when a future income is secured you may have that pay raise!
Sound Effects Composers
If you’re not good at creating nice tracks but you think you have SICK sound effects skill then drop an application email off to my email and we’ll discuss you joining our team! There are no senior positions for this job but you will still be treated like a composer. You will work closely with not only the story-board and artists but also the Music Composers simply because they may be able to input some different suggestions.
User Interface Artist
Currently only one UI artist is up for position. As the UI artist you will create the menus, inventory, fight menus etc. Any interface art needed will be asked of you to complete which means you will work closely with our Programmers and similarly with the other artists to really make the UI blend in with the game and make a great gaming experience! There is no Senior position planned as of now for this job .
Story-Board Writer
As a writer myself I know it’s hard to work on a project you’re unfamiliar with but please writers don’t be intimidated. I will work hand-in-hand with you during all projects and we will create some of the best gaming plots ever! There is potential of a senior position for this job as my role may expand during the process of this studio getting bigger meaning once I’m too busy to give instructions everywhere I’ll pass my leadership in writer to my choice of the best suited writer to be the Senior Story-Board Writer.
Game Designer
As Gyro Games Game Designer you will essentially be like my right-hand man. We will work together to lead the project successfully to a completion, essentially you will work mainly with the technical aspect with the programmers mostly seeing as my knowledge is more so in the arts area. Your position will essentially be a one and only position unless down the road there is a need for more people to lead the projects. You must be highly vocal, dependable, time manageable and used to a leadership position.
Since we have no games in our portfolio we will not be doing a kick starter for this game simply because how can we expect people to fund us if we have nothing to show them what we are capable of? Therefore like stated multiple times this game will not offer any payments (unless it does very well in selling, we need profit to support the game and the company for future production so...). I can however be a reference for any future jobs/applications post-working with me. Future projects will eventually lead to a secure income.
A email/skype is required as well as a microphone for this project in order to communicate.
If you're interested in joining Gyro Games or doing an intern project email your resume/application to; nicholas_7_05@icloud.com please include any useful information/past work experience (volunteer, paid etc.) to increase your chances of acceptance. Upon emailing me you will receive a description more in depth of the game/storyline. Thanks! Also add me on Skype; ScaryKillerN for future communication after your application has been emailed.
During the creation of Crystal Dungeons, our game, we will be doing a collaboration with Devils Inc Studio owner Mark, a Game Desiner who will help us to complete this game. We hope this will not only speed the process of completion up but allow us to see how an experience studio works well together, not only that but we hope this will also allow more time and work to be able to spend in making the game look and feel nicer!
Basically what I read here was:
"We have a completely original game idea, now we just need people to make it for us."
The programmers are going to be by far the hardest for you to get hold of. There is a shortage of engineering-minded people in the mainstream games industry ATM, which means that established companies are paying good money to get their hands on them.
A full GDD is a must for me before I think about joining any project.
Stay a while and listen.
We have three programmers actually, a game desiner, plenty of composers, just got 2 2D artists, 2 concept artist and a texture artist in the past 3 days!
We also have a GDD that is constantly being updated as we iron out our details before we start development.
I think that one thing you should probably reasses is the fact that there are more prospective game projects than there are qualified artists, and that of those projects the vast majority will never reach completion. Generally speaking you aren't doing an artist a favor by allowing them to work for free on your project--they are, in fact, doing you an enormous favor if they are at all experienced. Some artists do go for that sort of thing, though I suspect it's mostly people who are kind of new and need to get it out of their system.
All that to say, I think you may be overestimating the benefits you can offer to people who want to start in game making. Your company is certainly not at the point where you can have an 'intern' on one of your projects--interns are supposed to be learning in a professional environment from people with a lot of experience. As far as I can tell that isn't the case here. You mention Devils Inc Studio, but from what I can tell they were just founded last year by two guys without direct industry experience and have yet to complete a game. None of that means that you or they couldn't make a great game--everyone has to start somewhere--but it's definitely not going to be like working with a proven studio and it will be a learning process for everyone. And most relevantly it's unlikely to end up being something that will be terribly meaningful on an artist's portfolio relative to personal work or especially relative to paid work.
I'm not meaning to be a downer, and I really hope that you guys have a lot of success in your work. But I also think it's important for devs to understand that just having a project isn't enough to attract artists--if you don't have money to offer then it's on you to prove that working on your project is a better use of time and energy than working on any of the many other unpaid projects out there.
This has a bit of a lack of information. you should say what programs will be used, what knowledge is needed and so on. its actually a little hard to take you seriously with an intro like that. I thought this would be an opportunity to get a bit of work but I feel like you can just be two random people that'll work on a game for a week then stop. I may reconsider accepting a role if you can give some proper info and an idea on what your doing.
