We are just using the freeware 'Tiled' to make the maps at this point.

just to be straight, 'Tiled' is not freeware but free software. Here's the diff. Couple of links should give you a slightly better understanding :-

shirish, Tiled is both freeware and free software.  It is freeware in the sense that it is free to use.  It is "free software" in the sense that you momented, because it gives you open source code.  That doesn't make it any less freeware.
