Open Pixel Platformer
Join this ambitious collaboration project!
Way back over at PixelJoint.com there was a plan for a community build pixel art game. Many artists joined in and many assets were created but lack of organisation put all the work to waste.
Today I present you a brand new attempt, the Open Pixel Platformer. The aim is to create a CC licensed pixel art set usable for 'generic' platform games. If this turns out to be a success we could even try and take next steps and build an actual game with the community!
Over the last two months many discussions have been taking place with many PJ members. A style was chosen, DawnBringer has published his DB32 palette for us and art is being submitted as we speak!
Here in the 'jungle set' there are already many contributors, but feel free to discuss, edit & improve or create new assets for it.
Specifically I would like to invite all of you to help with the creation of a 'village set', which only started a few days ago!
Please note that everything submitted to this project will be licensed CC-BY 3.0 , which means that anyone can use your artwork for any purpose and modify it, as long as they attribute you as the original creator.
If you are interested in contributing, please have a look at the style guide and reply to the village set thread with your contributions!

Join the fun, and let's show the world what we pixel artists can do!
Feel free to discuss and submit art in this thread at OGA as well, though it might take me a bit longer to find and update everything. Perhaps people could do suggestions how it would be easy to keep track of files, updates etc in such a way that the community can update the database by itself? Forum posts take a lot of manual work and get chaotic after a lot of submissions.
Hey guys,
The OPP now has its own wiki! We could use some volunteers who update pages and check revisions, even if you are not an artist you can help us out!

Oh, and I attached a mockup here to show you some of the stuff we already got. All for free!

Just have to say, this project is awesome and needs some attention - it's a perfect fit for what several people have been demanding/asking/begging for from OGA:
- High-quality
- Cohesive
- Openly-licensed
- A great occasion for a 90's hiphop reference (who's down with OPP?)
BartK (and the FreeGamer crew), show this project some front-page love!

Thanks for your comment :)
I have talked to Bart before even starting this project a month ago, but I guess he is busy now with his little one :). If anyone else is able to put a message about this on the front page that would be really really nice!
Also I've added another teasing animation to this post! You can find all the seperate animations for this toucan over here.

Ah, that looks pretty cool... just the characters look a bit out of place and could probably be a bit more "pixel" styled.
But I will definilty follow this cool endeavor (sorry no pixel artist, so I can't contribute myself).

@Hapiel:
Things are still a little crazy here, and will calm down in 3 weeks or so once we put our daughter in daycare.
If you can type up a summary for me and reply with it here, I'll post it to the blog.
Thanks!
Bart
Don't worry, personal life is always more important than video game projects ;).
Actually we are in a stage of seeing if we can make a game out of this or not, I hope we can come up with a clear descision to either go for it or stick with a tileset. Once we are more goal focussed I will write that post for the front page!

Sounds good!
Just an FYI to other admins, when the post is written up, feel free to put it on the front page. No need to wait for me to do it. :)
Nice work, makes me want to eventually create a platformer. :)
Hey Hapiel, it looks like the wiki is down. Given that Firefox is reporting it as an attack site, I'm guessing it was hacked in some way. I can provide you with free wiki space here on OGA if you'd like.
Also, I'm working on a castle set, just for kicks. Here's the WIP thread:
http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/open-pixel-platformer-castle-set-wip-c...
This is a really awesome project! I'm a bit biased toward the Liberated Pixel Cup because I'm making a game in that style but this looks great!
Maybe I'll try a side-scroller after I get done with my current game using these assets. Could be fun.
Just saying hi to follow the thread.
Hey Bart,
I took the wiki down and was able to download all the files and the database. If I want to get it back up I would need to fix it at some offline server first and install some proper anti spam measurements but as I am not the most techy guy it is going to take some time...
Would you be interested to help me out? Having it hosted here would sound ideal (though it still needs to be cleaned up and protected). Shoot me an email!

Do you really need the wiki? Posting the work here on OGA and making a collection would be fine too, no?

From what I've seen of bart's handy work you're safer to register an account here. I've seen zero spam on this site and I've been looking quite a bit. They're very careful here :)
Yes, we do need the wiki. OGA's system does not allow for collaborators to update files. Also with an own wiki we can stay our own project rather than breaking into another community.
It seems that Bart wants to host us, which is awesome!

Actually, you can add collaborators here - when you Edit a submission, there's a spot to add them in the bottom-left, after which those users can also Edit the submission. That said, I agree that the wiki format is a better fit for the OPP.
@William.Thompsonj: Spam does crop up here and there, most often as bogus Collections. OGA has some pretty good filtering in place, though, and Bart and the other admins tend to catch the ones that slip through fairly quickly.

Hey guys,
Just a tiny tiny update for you guys:
The style will be overhauled soon, check out these new images I attached
As soon as Bart is ready we will have the wiki online again, here at OGA
We have a proper game demo running on the Frogatto Engine which you can find here

All exciting stuff!

Using the frogatto engine sounds great!
The new character style is definitly a huge improvement, although it will raise the entry barrier for attitional contributions a lot.
Oh and... I find the very stereotypical look of the "Africans" slightly disturbing.

Glad to see it's back. I do hope the team working on it will take a long, hard look at the racist tribal characters and do the right thing and get them fixed or replaced with something else entirely if you can't tone them down. As they are the primary enemy right now it is very incomplete without using graphics that are quite offensive to a large percentage of the public.
Hi Dannorder (and Julius, who made a similar point earlier),
I am happy to see you are concerned about racism, so am I.
However, I think you might see a couple things wrong here. At first, he is not 'the main enemy'. Game devs are free to use these sprites for whatever purpose they like, and we strive to include multiple fully animated characters.
Actually in the old art style a native was the first and only to be completely animated as we intended him to be the hero of our game demo: http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=16828
More importantly: All these sprites are cartoony caricatures. We can not play around with exaggerating certain features without creating unrealistic stereotypes, but this does not imply racism. If you check out our 'white' characters more carefully you will see that they also have exaggerated features.
This project is a collaboration project without boundaries, anyone from any culture is free to submit his opinions and artwork. You are invited to add the kind of sprites and characters you would like to see in this project, to increase the diversity .
At last, if you think more discussion is necessary, I invite you to come over to our forums:)
See you around!
